SocialFi's Second Act: Can Decentralized Social Networks Solve the Bot and Identity Problem?

The SocialFi user base is growing exponentially and gradually reaching historical highs. This sector has represented a $5 billion niche growing 300% year-over-year. The first wave of SocialFi came in 2023-2024 and saw explosive growth which was followed by a dramatic decline. Farcaster’s daily active users plummeted from 104000 users in July to 60000 by September 2024. Lens Protocol experienced a steep drop in user engagement, with users dwindling from over 37000 on February 28 to just 142 by September 8, in 2024. And daily active users declined from 42281 users in July to just 8368. The core problem seemed to be that early SocialFi platforms replicated Web2 functionality without solving fundamental issues of fake accounts, bot spam and identity verification that plague traditional social media. Let’s look at the core issues and solutions pertaining to SocialFi's second Act.

The ghost town crisis

By Q4 2025, the initial hype around Twitter killer social media seems to have evaporated. Platforms like Friend.Tech have effectively shuttered and major players like Farcaster and Lens are facing an existential adoption crisis. Reports from October 2025 indicate that Farcaster’s daily active users dropped to approximately 40000-60000. However, “Power Badge” data of real verified users suggests that only approximately 4360 users are genuinely humans and the rest are more likely automated bots farming engagement.

SocialFi’s first lesson is that based on the 2024-2025 period, merely putting social media on-chain is insufficient. Users will not switch from X or Instagram solely because you are selling the decentralization scripture while the user experience is clunky and spammy.

In a defining moment for the industry in November 2025, Farcaster’s leadership signalled a strategic pivot away from a pure social first strategy toward a wallet focused product. In addition, internal data shows that financial utility like trading, transactions and holding assets have far more user retention than social posting. The leadership seems to have grasped the fact that it's easier to add social features to a wallet than to build a social network that tries to be a wallet!

The second act

Currently, it seems like the narrative has shifted. SocialFi’s second act is not about building new social apps but it is about building the Identity and Reputation layer that powers these social apps. The focus has moved from content to provenance, that is verifying who is speaking now just what they said!

Sybil attacks in which one person creates thousands of fake identities, destroys tokenomics and community trust and creates more enemies than friends among the users. Traditional web 2 methods like Captchas fail against 2025 era AI agents. The only solution that can be used is cryptographic Proof of Personhood.

To integrate this solution into their systems, projects are now integrating Zero-Knowledge (ZK) proofs to verify humanity without doxing users. The key concept involves generating cryptographic proofs that they are unique humans for example via biometric passport scans or hardware obs and then only sharing the proof, not the biometric data itself. Now, this tech is cool no doubt, but doesn’t this mean that they will have to store this biometric data elsewhere? And a hack could……?

Key leading projects and their mechanisms

Rarimo and the ZK passport standard

Rarimo has emerged as a critical infrastructure player by late 2025. It makes use of ZK Proofs to allow users to scan their biometric passports (NFC-enabled) using a platform. The app then generates a ZK proof that confirms that you are a unique human with a valid government ID withou ever revealing the name, country or passport number to the app. This is a permissionless anti-sybil mechanism which doesn’t rely on a central company but uses trusted gvernment infrastructure like passports in a privacy preserving way. As for adoption, by late 025, niche voting apps and high-stakes DAOs are using this to ensure  the one person one vote mantra is maintained without KYC checks.

Lens Protocol with the smart account architecture

In late 2025, Lens migrated to the Lens Chain, a ZKsync based Layer 2. The biggest shift is moving from Profile NFTs system to Smart Accounts. The main benefit of this shift is that a user’s profile is now a smart contract wallet and this allows for complex modules to be attached to an identity. As a result, this system has an anti-bot application since a user can attach a verification module to their account. For example, a module that requires holding specific reputation tokens or passing a Gitcoin Passport check before they can comment or collect content.

The new Lens Chain uses Avail for data availability, significantly lowering the cost of these complex identity transactions, making it economically viable to verify millions of users.

World ID 2.0 with the Human Passport integration

By late 2025, Worldcoin’s World ID 2.0 has integrated with major non crypto platforms like Shopify, Reddit, Telegram and Minecraft. This platform introduced a tiered verification system. The Level 1 or Lite verification is device-based verification and it has a lower trust while being useful for reducing spam. Level 2 or Orb involves an iris-scan verification and has the highest trust especially for 1 person guarantees.

Social Fi apps are using World ID as a login gate. You can use the app anonymously but to earn rewards or receive airdrops, you must provide a Level 2 proof. And this effectively kills airdrop farming bots while preserving  user privacy!

Final thoughts and conclusion

The next winning apps will not just be feeds, they will be Reputation Markets. Users will curate their on-chain history like loans paid, governance votes cast and verified human status to unlock access to exclusive communities or financial opportunities. We must expect Social Wallets to become the dominant interface in SocialFi. You will not have to login to a social app; as your wallet will be your feed, showing you opportunities based on your verified identity and on-chain graph.

There is no doubt or lie in the fact that SocialFi failed to beat Web2 at the attention economy game. Its Second Act is about winning the trust economy by providing the only reliable way to distinguish humans from AI in an increasingly synthetic internet.
