Failing to convince family to onboard on crypto

Failing to convince friends/ friends to adopt web 3 and seeing them miss out the web 3 revolution

In families, bonds are shared by blood and they say blood is thicker than water. On the other hand, in friendship we forge our bonds through sharing secrets, opportunities and problems. While this can be true in real life, it's a foreign issue in the world of crypto and web 3. While web 3 is a world of great opportunity built on the blockchain, it might be very difficult to convince your friends and family to join you.

Let’s dive deep and explore the bittersweet feeling of striking it rich in web 3 while feeling the pain for the friends that missed out because they would not listen.

Trying to educate those who won’t listen

While I haven’t made it in crypto yet, I have come across situations of those who have made it and they tried to onboard their friends or family. I would like to say that most of the time it did not end well. I have also tried to onboard friends and family on good deals and airdrops, I was also received with ignored messages as well as cold shoulders.

There are many scammers and negative views about crypto and web 3 inside the society. This has made it hard to onboard common folks. To be specific, there are people who don't even know about web 2, web 3 or crypto and they don’t even want to know. When you try to teach or onboard such people, the listening door will be shutdown straight on your face.

You would try to send them all the white papers, the vision of a project’s team or even the amount of capital raised, they will not care. All the promises of digital ownership of assets are gibberish to them. They would even laugh at you if you told them that last week you had minted a digital goat with a tiny hat on its head. It's all nonsense to them.

To such people, they  had rather stick to their instagram feed than chase the fantasies of imaginary money that can be downloaded. They couldn't care less about funny ugly pictures of some chimpanzees that are tokenised on the blockchain. They would rather use the investment money elsewhere.

You will carry the burden of a visionary who wishes well for  family and friends but faces rejection

Let me tell you this, if you have tried the above scenarios to convince friends and family to onboard crypto, you are the family visionary. You envision a world where creators are compensated fairly, where data is not monopolised by the few and where digital assets can be owned by just anyone with a few cents. This is what web 3 and blockchain technology is all about.

Unfortunately, your family and friends don't appreciate this. They would rather stick to the world where a bank can hide their financial statements from the public. They would prefer to wait 2 days to withdraw their money since banks don’t during the weekend. In addition, they would rather write content for claps and cheers on X and facebook and then be told their country does not have stripe for withdrawal. Some would rather, write blogs and tell stories before waiting for stringent verification procedures on adsense. These are things that are foreign in the crypto world.

We have sites like Inleo, publish0x and steemit, where you see your posts blow and earnings multiply in real time. In addition you just need a correct wallet address to receive your earnings. No waiting for 4 months just for google adsense to verify your address through some letter, and then wait for 2 months to receive the first payout.

While you are talking about instant earnings, and tokenisation of everything, even music. Your peers are crying because their favourite musician needs 4 middlemen to release and market their music. They had rather board a bus or make a call to their broker to buy shares of their favourite companies on the stock exchange. Rather than taking their phone and opening a telegram wallet to see what's going on, in tokenised shares today!

Well, you have tried to make them see the light, and it's frustrating but what can you do?

Why they want to stay away from all this glory you try to show them

It's probably not your fault that folks closer to you do not want to hear anything to do about cryptocurrencies, blockchain and web 3. In the early days, cryptocurrencies and blockchain technologies were filled with confusing technical jargon, massive scams and very bad user interfaces.

In this current world, I believe that each person has either been scammed by crypto scammers or knows someone they who lost all their fortunes to scams. So, such a person will be guarded against anything to do with crypto. In my country, try to tell them about bitcoin and crypto trading and they will tell you that it's impossible to download money.

Not that your friends or family won’t come, but you will only see them after you have made it. By that time they will be willing to learn, but you either won’t have the time and patience anymore or it will be too late. And at that time, you will become the village villain who gatekeeps the road to wealth.

You will accept that some opportunities are not for everyone no matter how hard you try.

While I have rambled about everything else, the truth is that you cannot force evolution, even if it's a family member. The rules of the jungle say that those who are willing to adapt will survive, while those stuck in their old ways will fade away like mist under the morning sun.

You cannot drag someone into the blockchain world. There are also losses in this world, and if someone you dragged in loses their fortune, you become the villain. The best you can do is to keep the conversation open and teach those who are curious while ignoring those who said no. Occasional educational posts will allow you to leave a few bread crumbs for that may lead them to the promised land.

If they work up one day, and it's too late, just smile with a bittersweet satisfaction and move. After all, not all Israelites reached the promised land, some lost their lives, some rebelled and some were killed. You can still be friends and family even though your portfolios might be tell different stories.

Conclusion

You have tried to take everyone with you on the web 3 roller coaster, and your folks just chose to observe from the side. Maybe they will join halfway, or they will regret not getting onto the rollercoaster with you. Crypto and web 3 are not for everyone, like the dotcom bubble, some people are just meant to miss out.
