Microsoft is discussing with Discord about buying the chat platform for 10 billion dollars according to Bloomberg. Phil Spencer, the chief of Xbox is supposed to be talking to Discord about the potential acquisition. I guess they want to use it wth Xbox because Discord started as a gaming-focused project and is to this day very popular among gamers.
Venture Beat says that Discord was exploring the $10 billion-plus sale with multiple potential buyers but that it had signed an exclusive acquisition discussion with one company. Bloomberg on the other hand says the deal isn’t imminent however, and one source saying Discord would be more likely to go public.
Right now Discord has 140 million monthly users and earned $130 million in revenue last year but the company isn’t profitable yet according to Wall Street Journal. The last valuation was at around 7 billion dollars. Microsoft also bought Skype and Yammer and in the past. And we all know what happened to these platforms in terms of popularity.
