I will be completely honest. In the beginning of my investmentjourney I used to check my portfolio on an hourly basis.
Every tiny dip made me so nervous, and every little spike was extremely exciting.
I wasn’t able to do anything besides checking what my portfolio was doing. Work became hard to focus on and my social life as well. Even my mental health started to deteriorate.
For what purpose did I do all of this?
In fact, it did not result in anything useful because the stock market doesn’t actually care what you are doing.
---
The main downside of constantly checking your portfolio
The issue of checking your portfolio over and over is that you are more likely to make emotional decisions.
You see that something is dipping, and you freak out and immediately sell. Thus, your losses are made permanent.
However, you could see that the value is rising and become greedy, so you continue buying at its peak.
The more you observe what your portfolio does, the more emotions you express. And the more you demonstrate these emotions, the worse you will decide.
---
What I am doing right now
I will check my investment portfolio only one time every week.
That is everything. I actually might spend even a month without looking at anything.
You can guess what is going to happen next. My portfolio will perform well without me obsessing over it.
---
Why it does actually work.
Why It Works
Less stress You don’t have to stress every minute about the stock value going down or up.
More sound decisions You won’t be making emotional investment decisions anymore.
More time You can invest your time on the important parts of your life.
Future vision You don’t worry as much about short-term fluctuations.
---
Last but not least: Your portfolio doesn't need to be monitored all the time, it only needs to be respected.
Stop checking your portfolio on an hourly basis. Stop panicking, and just don’t be obsessing anymore. Just invest, buy, HODL and enjoy your life. You won't regret doing that, your future you would thank you.
