A funny thing happens during bull runs. People get incredibly generous with their coin. It's not that they are kind-hearted individuals in nature. In fact, many who are extremely successful are also extremely capitalistic and competitive. However, something stronger takes over and, in their zeal to one-up each other, they start dropping crypto everywhere to free. It's a bit like the Romans handing out free bread to the masses of the poor during the heyday of crowded Rome, or a king flicking a few silver coins to the crowd as he passes by with an entourage going through a city main street. The goal is to show off power so much so, the idea of just flicking value away is in itself a symbol of exclusive richness and achievement.
Thank You for Your Ego
Personal pride and ego are to blame. The individuals involved are extremely focused on their own status placement within their community. As a result, a similar to social media influencers, the more they generate in interest, the more following and adulation they collect. In some respects, this might even be more attractive to these individuals than the money itself. Whether one thinks this is ethically correct or not, moral or immoral, it's not really my concern for the most part. Instead, simply being in the receiving channel and flow works for me quite well.
Not Winning a Lottery, But Not Bad
Since the beginning of the latest bull run, the amount of free crypto I've received in different channels has probably gone up at least some 500 percent, but in dollar values its probably something in the range of $20-$30 a month. It's not bad for free money in digital crypto form (which of course has the added benefit of being able to grow with the market over time as well).
There is the additional benefit of the fact that the money receive in these instances is free, in essence a gift. Under most tax laws (but don't rely on me as an expert), a gift is not taxable income to the recipient (it may be to the sender though), unlike a tip for services rendered, an airdrop distribution to a wallet or a payment for work income. If the bull season continues, add up another 8 months for the year, and now we're talking about $160-$240 or more. Not bad for freebies and definitely usable versus being just "dust."
But About What It Means to Recipients...
Do I care that I'm one of these recipients getting these freebies? Not really. It's literally no or minimal effort to get and, in aggregate, the money starts to become a nice little extra pot of digital cash over time. Some people my get their collars ruffled, but there will always be the ego-types showing off their money to the world. That's why they have huge entourages on their coattails, picking up as much as they can for themselves too. And if I take those freebies and turn them around into useful purchases, like new tires for my truck for example, then more power to me.
