The Liquid Network White Hack Incident

The Liquid Network White Hack Incident

Introduction

News spread fast several weeks ago after a tweet on X by watcher.guru, my favorite X account for receiving financial, politics and crypto-financial information, exactly at 7:00 am of September 07, 2026, reading as follows:

JUST IN: 4,000 Bitcoin worth $320 million withdrawn following Liquid Network hack.

The hacker is now communicating with network maintainers through on-chain Bitcoin transactions & intends to return the $BTC after the vulnerability is fixed. pic.twitter.com/OXpS1X3oqK

Hacker's onchain message to Liquid.

Who is BlockStream and the Liquid Network

Of course, the first question that raised in my mind was:

Who is BlockStream and the Liquid Network?

According to Cryptoslate, Blockstream is a Bitcoin and digital assets infrastructure company co-founded in 2014 by Adam Back, a cryptorapher and a long-time contributor to Bitcoin’s underlying technology through the Cypherpunk newsletter during the early 00s. For several people Adam Back might be even behind the Satoshi Nakamoto's hidden identity as well or... part of it. Yet, Blockstream is known for its work on Bitcoin scalability, security, and financial infrastructure, as well as for contributing to the development of sidechains and second-layer solutions on Bitcoin having the legendary Adam Back himself as a Chief Executive Officer.

Over the years and possibly due to Adam Back's reputation, Blockstream managed to collect funding from venture capital firms and strategic investors interested in Bitcoin infrastructure and developed a range of interested Bitcoin-oriented products such as:

  • The Liquid Network, a Bitcoin Layer-2 micropayment system.
  • Blockstream Green, a Bitcoin wallet focused on security and self-custody
  • Blockstream Satellite, a network that broadcasts the Bitcoin blockchain data via satellite to improve network resilience and accessibility, bypassing the traditional terrestrial internet providers that may ban any Bitcoin node at will.
  • Enterprise infrastructure solutions for Bitcoin custody, settlement, and asset issuance
  • Mining-related products and services, including ASIC management and hosting
  • Contribution to the development and evolution of the Bitcoin Core algorithm.

Specifically, the Liquid Network is a Sidechain aka a Bitcoin Layer-2 micropayment system similar to the Lighting Network that may support high volumes of instant Bitcoin payments using proportional transaction fees operating at the speed of light. In a nutshell, the Liquid Network is trying to solve the Blockchain Trilemma by issuing L-BTC assets against Bitcoin locked in reserve so trades can settle faster, while the network is overseen by a "Federation" of more than 80 exchanges, infrastructure firms and asset managers. L-BTC funds are kept on a so-called Federation wallet...

and this is where things started going wrongly...

How the Hack happened

On September 6th, 2026, Blockstream announced through its X account that “white-hat hackers,” removed roughly 4,000 of the 4,200 bitcoin held in its federation wallet on the Liquid Network.

We are aware of a security incident on @Liquid_BTC. Purported white-hat hackers have withdrawn ~4,000 BTC (~$320 million) from the Liquid Federation wallet. The @Blockstream team is working on contacting them on-chain with a signed message.

What we know so far is that the funds…

The sidechain halted new transactions and warned that wallets would be disrupted while federation members work to restore service since the drain of nearly the entire reserve raises doubts about the security and integrity of the whole Liquid network.

In fact, the theft didn’t occur because a password or private key was compromised, the method behind most crypto hacks happen. Instead, the stolen funds slipped out of the network through SideSwap, a normal and approved trading platform.

According to Chainanalysis, Blockstream reported that the vulnerability appeared to have originated in "Elements", the Bitcoin Core fork used by Liquid, where a range-proof verification cache bug apparently enabled the creation of L-BTC without the Bitcoin normally required to back it. Those unbacked tokens were then used to obtain real BTC from Liquid’s reserves through the normal peg-out process.

As a consequence, the root cause of the hack was an underlying bug at the node level of the Liquid Network's transaction software which enabled the creation of an amount of Bitcoin out of thin air but the SideSwap trading platform couldn’t define which coins came from the bug and which were real, so it treated them all the same as original.

For those who don't know, a white hat hacker is an ethical hacker who exploits a flaw in a protected system before malicious actors do first. They typically exploit a flaw, move the money and seek a fee to return it.

Ethical hackers protected by Belgian cyber watchdog

The white hacker communicated then with Liquid Network administrators onchain Bitcoin transactions, promising to return the money once the vulnerability is fixed.

Please fix the bug first. The chain is under risk at latest commit right now. Make sure every node is patched. Then we will transfer the money back safely after confirming the fix.

Hacker's onchain message to Liquid.

And when Blockstream patched Liquid Network nodes to avoid having a similar incident in the future, the white hacker returned 3,400 BTC worth about $268 million to the Liquid Federation wallet. Yet, he decided to retain approximately 600 BTC which is equivalent to 15% of the stolen funds. and this is where conspiracy theories begun...

Conspiracy Theories

According to Cryptocapitalist, a Greek CryptoYoutuber, the fact that the incident wasn't processed internally but it went out to the public on social media and major crypto news portals is suspicious. Also if the white hacker was indeed a white hacker he should have returned the whole amount that slipped out from the Liquid Network. And he mentions that there are several reasons for that something else might had actually happened.

  1. Marketing. An exciting way to attract publicity over your corporation is to announce that the funds kept as a reserve to support your project were stolen in a hack and that the hacker decided to return the stolen funds because he is a nice guy.
  2. Money Laundering. An exciting way to put your hand into the reserved funds of your project to cover some accidental openings in your business is to put a third party, in this case a white hacker, to hack them due to a software vulnerability that was later patched and then to have him return the funds but not all of them !!!
  3. Combination of 1 and 2.

Final Thoughts

Many articles have been written so far on the web about the Liquid Network 2026 hack for several reasons. One of the reasons was that it took place on a Bitcoin sidechain and not in any other Layer-1 altcoin jeopardizing the integrity of the Blockchain trechnology as it was described by Satoshi Nakamoto on the paper "A peer to peer electronic cash system".

Is Bitcoin technology is getting old and overtaken by modern technologies such as the Quantum computers and Artificial Intelligence? No or someone might imply not yet.

This time the incident that took place on Liquid Network didn’t occur because a password or private key was compromised by the means of the emerging technologies of Quantum Computing or Artificial Intelligence but the stolen funds moved out of the network's custody due to an underlying software bug discovered by the "white hackers".

Whenever the hack was a marketing trick or a laundering money trick, is something that it might be proved so in the future. Nevertheless, I have decided to download the Blockstream wallet into my device setting up an account there and you all free to provide your donations.

Just for the history, Adam Back himself has never made any comment or statement yet about the incident.
