What is the Bitcoin Halvening?

The Bitcoin Halving is an event where the rate at which new Bitcoins are being created is halved. This occurs roughly every four years, specifically when every 210,000 blocks are processed on the bitcoin blockchain.

The supply of Bitcoin is finite and there will only ever be 21 million BTC that can ever be created. Once the maximum supply is reached, no more BTC will ever be produced.

That is why you may have heard of Bitcoin referred to as “digital gold” — just like precious metals, there is only a limited amount in the world, and someday, all of it will have been extracted.

When the halving has been completed, newly produced Bitcoins become increasingly scarce — similar to gold mining where finding new deposits becomes more challenging over time.
