When you log onto pretty much any social media or blogging website these days, you can do many wonderful things:
- Laugh at cats
- Drunk video call your friends
- Make money printer memes
BUT, there is one thing so vile, so sinister, and so unequivocally EVIL that it's been universally shunned from every corner of the modern web:
Affiliate link (noun):
"A shareable URL link that contains the affiliate's ID, which gives said poster a commission or bonus of some kind"
Why are affiliate links (and their promoters) so globally despised?
Clearly, it's because after years of businesses, digital entrepreneurs, and flat-out spammers all flocking to every message board they could get their hands on, people have become SICK of it. Nobody likes to start reading someone's comment online, just to find out that it's all a facade in pursuit of a quick, low-effort buck.
And as the people of the internet became more proficient in sniffing out these "online used car salesmen," the acceptance and utility of affiliate linking has become somewhat of a lost relic in recent years.
Then...along came Publish0x
I don't know about you all, but personally, I've sensed a very different vibe when it comes to referral links on the Publish0x platform. As any platform with a rapidly-growing following, it's critical that we stand close guard to keep this great balance in check.
If you see someone being too pushy, DOWNVOTE THEM, and leave an honest comment about how you feel.
In a community that is so friendly and supportive across the board, it can be easy to let our guards down, and let the thumbs-up button fall into muscle memory. It is incredibly important that we DO NOT fall into this trap of over-acceptance!
Show love to those who have earned it, and be critical to those who were not worth your time. As long as we all do this, we may just be building the most productive, democratic blogging community the internet has ever seen.
