What is the difference between Blockchain and Hashgraph?

By Jaymacrypto | Crypto & Diabetes | 9 Mar 2023

Blockchain and Hashgraph are both distributed ledger technologies used to record and store transactions in a secure and decentralized manner. However, there are some differences between the two technologies.

  1. Consensus Algorithm: The most significant difference between the two technologies is their consensus algorithm. Blockchain uses a consensus algorithm called Proof of Work (PoW) or Proof of Stake (PoS), which requires participants to compete to validate transactions and add them to the blockchain. In contrast, Hashgraph uses a consensus algorithm called Virtual Voting (or Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus algorithm) that does not require participants to compete, but instead, they vote on each other’s transactions in real-time.

  2. Performance: Hashgraph claims to have faster transaction processing speeds than blockchain technology. Hashgraph can handle thousands of transactions per second (TPS) whereas most blockchain networks are only capable of handling a few hundred TPS.

  3. Security: Both blockchain and Hashgraph are designed to be secure and tamper-resistant. However, Hashgraph claims to be more secure than blockchain due to its consensus algorithm which does not require mining and is based on virtual voting.

  4. Decentralization: Both blockchain and Hashgraph are decentralized systems. However, Hashgraph claims to have better decentralization because its consensus algorithm allows for a more democratic and fair distribution of transaction validation.

In summary, while both blockchain and Hashgraph are distributed ledger technologies used for secure and decentralized transactions, Hashgraph's consensus algorithm provides faster transaction processing speeds, better decentralization, and claims to be more secure
