The crypto market, but especially Ethereum, has had a turbulent August, marked by a significant underperformance compared to Bitcoin. This dynamic has raised concerns among investors, especially in view of a historically weak seasonality in the coming months.

QCP Capital data highlights a 22.2% contraction of Ethereum in August, compared to an 8.6% decline of Bitcoin. This discrepancy was triggered by several factors, including:
- Deleveraging Events: The deleveraging event triggered by Jump Crypto, in conjunction with the turbulence in the Asian markets, amplified volatility and hit Ethereum hard.
- Spot ETF Weakness: Recent Spot ETFs on Ethereum have recorded significantly lower volumes than initially expected, suggesting limited interest from institutional investors.
- Negative Sentiment: Growing negative sentiment has helped trigger indiscriminate selling, adding to price pressure.
Future Implications
Ethereum’s weak performance and broader market dynamics raise questions about the near-term outlook:
- Negative Seasonality: September and October have historically been characterized by weakness in Bitcoin, with an average decline of 4.5%. This could extend to Etherem and other cryptocurrencies.
- Derivatives: Derivatives data indicates bearish investor positioning, suggesting negative expectations for the near-term.
