Golden Age of Metamask:
There was a time when it was the wallet by which all others were measured, Metamask. Every platform that required a "Connect Wallet" feature Metamask was the default that it was assumed everyone was using to connect and perform all on chain actions therefore every guide and how to one could find online that detailed the procedures involved a crypto like transaction Metamask was the wallet used. Why? Honestly then you really couldn't deny the supremacy a top the crypto world of wallets, it's integration with platforms was seamless and glitch free almost as if projects designed their whole infrastructure with Metamask as a default component whether it desktop, laptop, or mobile wallet all of them really made the whole thing easier. The number of people by which their introduction into crypto came hand in hand with there introduction to Metamask Wallet (myself among those counted) simultaneously is possibly in the millions at the very least the hundreds of thousands without question to get to the barebones of it you can make the argument that every single person that's life has to do with crypto not a single one of them can say they don't know what metamask is or they don't use it that in itself is a feat to be proud of. Some platforms will not perform correctly without metamask connected to it whether that be because of some secret Kabal of whales greasing the system or maybe Metamask held such a dominance no one thought other wallets would even be necessary it's undeniable once upon a time Metamask reigned supreme. The features that set it apart all common place now but in 2016 they were groundbreaking:
-The everything wallet
-Buy, Sell, Trade crypto and NFTs
-Stake ETH
-Security features to protect assets with support 24/7 365 (a rarity in crypto even today)
-Seamless integration with 1,000s of DaPPs
-Web3??? (What is that in 2016 oohhh shiny words, now your considered lame if you don't include it as a left hand to all other features right)
These statements all true. The issue however is complacency because in 2016 when Metamask was made available to users as a browser extension for EVM transactions the landscape was somewhat static and the future uncertain the only thing that was a certainty was that crypto was growing which direction that was well that was the million dollar question. All the major needs of the time Metamask answered and it did it with a fluidity that was unparalleled users could log in and connect to EVM centered platforms with no hiccups no problems...key part, EVM then was the king or at least the queen to Bitcoin and other networks were simply a small discussion certainly not a "ethereum killer" as the crypto world was unsure if ethereum would even blossom so Metamask focused all its efforts to perfecting EVM integration and it done beautifully so who needs anything else. The problem is two things,
#1. EVM while certainly still a juggernaut in crypto it's hold on this title is not only being loosened by contenders like Solana and SUI users have used ethereum long enough that they see the positives it brings and they also see the negatives of shortcomings therefore project creators, developers, and baseline users alike are all looking for alternatives to ethereum why this is a problem well that's because metamask is only integrated on EVM chain platforms. So the aspect of the huge piece of the pie that Metamask simply cannot have a bite of because of incompatibility is hard to ignore moving forward.
#2. Quality of product has taken a huge hit and maybe these two issues are one in the same but the days of seamless integration and the gold standard of wallets is gone. The reason is up for debate but recently users have encountered periods where directly after updates Metamask would not work with certain browsers or wouldn't even work on the extension version all together only the mobile and then periods of the opposite issue where the mobile version wouldn't load wouldn't connect and the browser extension would perform if your lucky 50% of the time.
My two cents and a nickel about the Metamask of today....
The days of ethereum being on top unchallenged are gone and that goes hand in hand with Metamask being the gold standard. There are alternatives out there that offer the exact same features that once made Metamask the best plus the other wallets up the ante by offering features that Metamask in its current form just simply can't offer. The people behind Metamask must have seen this coming but instead of brainstorming and evolving their product and remaining that gold standard it's almost as if they have simply decided that it was good while it was good and that's that. So they haven't produced a product that makes it hard if not unnecessary to seek an alternative I stead they have managed to upgrade and update a titan into a skeleton of its former self. Transactions are no longer smooth and seamless your lucky they even go through, connecting to 1,000s of DaPPs no longer a foregone conclusion but more importantly it kinda considered a requirement to be a wallet, desktop or mobile use a smooth headache free endeavor is certainly no longer the case, and the news of and update or upgrade no longer ignored as status quo now a nail biter. In ten years the story will go one of two ways Metamask will either recover from the recent sub par product that has been updated to death as of late and reinvent itself with unforseen additions that once again show people why it was once the Michael Jordan of the crypto wallet world and I must say the recent Solana integration which is I'm sorry a nail in the coffin if you dont because Phantom has offered the reverse for well...forever so the argument is valid that Phantom wallet is a superior product to Metamask, so MM sorry you don't get credit for that it is seen as something if you don't do it you're pretty much singing your farewell balad And honestly the valid statement is "what took you so long" and it's that very procrastination of intelligence in adding features and additions that once made this wallet the pinnacle is now causing it to trudge along in adding things that other wallet simply see as a requirement to even start the game. So please stop following and once again lead. See below picture to give context of a reinvented Metamask:
or it will continue to be complacent and like a teen boy band of old only be spoken of in terms of how popular it once was until possibly 20 years from now think of the possibility of crypto becoming mainstream and mass adopted and Metamask being a dinosaur to evolutions homo sapiens as opposed to walking upright or tool making to modern humans (ponder that analogy good for a second). You may ask okay Mr opinionated what wallets do you use as someone who is a fan of Metamask it breaks my heart for it to be borderline unusable as of recent but honestly here are some of my favorites and where I have found a soft place to land during the Metamask crash
OKX: The unlimited amount of networks all the sub features and possible cryptopedia campaigns, staking choices, NFT integration just when you look at the totality of the wallet and it's compliment of features it's hard to make an argument for a better one in my opinion the best wallet out there right now. If the connection issues with certain platforms could be cleaned up it wouldn't even be a close race for this being the best wallet. But One of my favorite platforms to use Defikingdoms for the life of me Metamask is the only wallet I can get to work with it truth be told that's one of the main reasons I'm even writing this post or at least the spawning point of my thought bubble. Needless to say if I could get okay x to work with Defikingdoms Metamask would cease to be in my options. (If anyone can assist me in this arena the comment box has air and opportunity and both are abundant)
Bitget: honestly the same argument you can make for OKX you can make for Bitget it's really just a personal preference thing. Only drawback is it lacks the campaigns and airdrop features or at least the unique platforms involved but it makes up for it with superior staking options.
Phantom: Great wallet but if Solana doesn't gain the traction in the popularity that it has as of recent then Phantom is not even in this discussion so the fact that it is very reliant on Solana's success prevents it from being the standard by which all are measured but undeniable that it is a very reliable wallet that's got all the features minus unlimited network possibilities that all others have. Units NFT corridor and how you buy,sell, and trade these crypto collector editions is partly better than other wallets although Magic Eden's recent wallet introduction offers a competitor in this arena but it lacks all other valuable features outside of NFT so it's the proverbial tug and pull there.
Underdog of the century drumroll........
Keplr: Well maybe not an underdog but a wallet that is very deserving of praise and widespread use reason being it offers all the things that Metamask and OKX offer however it is centered around the Cosmos universe SDK which many other wallets are compatible with and are capable of integrating it is not where they shine.
How does metamask avoid this possible doom of a future or bask in the sunlight of a blossoming future aside from repairing the obvious shortcomings that have been implemented as of late with recent updates that is where my knowledge and my opinion ends cause if I knew the answer to that I would not be writing this blog but there's my two cents I even threw in a three legged buffalo nickel...
