The Conspiracy

These individuals secured remote employment with US-based companies using fictitious identities and earned salaries in cryptocurrency, which were subsequently funnelled to the North Korean regime. It is alleged that the cryptocurrency funds were utilised to support North Korea's weapons programmes, with over $7.74 million purportedly laundered in this manner.

The DoJ Action

The US Department of Justice has taken action by filing a civil forfeiture complaint and may collaborate with international partners to track and freeze the laundered assets. This development highlights the challenges posed by cryptocurrency in evading international sanctions. Ultimately, the US Justice Department's efforts to address these issues will require careful consideration and cooperation.

My Point

The use of fake identities for job creation is a concerning issue, yet the shift to online jobs has opened up opportunities for talented individuals worldwide. And the utilisation of funds for weapons programmes is a complex matter, as such activities are not unique to any country. Anyway, the purpose of cryptocurrency is to provide economic freedom, those workers earned the crypto.
