The Pardon Decision

     On 23rd October 2025, former Binance CEO and founder Changpeng Zhao (popularly known as “CZ”) was granted a full presidential pardon by US President Donald Trump. In 2023, CZ had been convicted in a financial misconduct case that led Binance to pay a 4.3 billion fine. CZ himself paid a personal fine of50 million and served a four-month prison sentence.

Crypto Policy at a Crossroads

     Clear policy-making around transparency and privacy in the crypto industry is still lacking, which is why this pardon has stirred controversy. The White House described the prosecution of Binance and CZ as “politically motivated targeting of the crypto industry,” but critics argue that the pardon sets a dangerous precedent — where major players appear to be above the law.
