CertiK wins SUI Network Bug Bounty for Hamsterwheel

By Yugocean | Crypto Champion | 20 Jun 2023

Blockchain audit firm CertiK has been awarded a $500k bug bounty by the Sui Foundation for discovering the Hamsterwheel attack in the $400 million Sui network.

What Is A HamsterWheel?

Hamsterwheel is a new bug related to denial of service, named by the Skyfall team of the CertiK firm that discovered it. Under a Hamsterwheel attack, an attacker needs to send a modest payload of 100 bytes to the validator node to trigger an indefinite loop that lasts even after the validator network is rebooted.

Sui Network Problem

Sui is a Move type of blockchain. It cannot run without movement. The hamsterwheel paused the Sui network transactions and eventually led to a network shutdown. The $400 million network shutdown was starting to bring a new bear attack to the market. In such a situation, SUI announced a bug bounty. Now SUI has implemented preventive measures for the future.

And Binance?

It is believed that the mainnet of SUI, which came into force on May 3, was also on the testnet. But it was launched on Binance, which makes it less feasible to implement without checking its drawbacks. Now questions may arise on Binance as well.
