CZ Say “Crypto Will Disappear” — What Does It Mean?

I was reading a recent interview with Changpeng Zhao, and somewhere between his prison story, reflections on building, and future plans, one idea actually stuck with me more than everything else. He said that in about five years we might stop using the word “crypto” altogether. Not because it fails or fades away, but because it becomes so embedded into everyday systems that calling it something separate just won’t make sense anymore. And the more I thought about it, the less it sounded like a bold prediction and more like a very practical observation. But look at Bitcoin now:

WhiteBIT Chart (5D): BTC / USDT

From a trader’s perspective, this might sound abstract or even a bit philosophical. But if you look at it from a business and infrastructure angle, it’s almost obvious. I’ve spent enough time working with companies trying to integrate crypto into their operations to see how this plays out in reality. Nobody in those conversations is excited about “crypto” itself. They’re not sitting there saying, “let’s adopt blockchain.” What they actually care about is much simpler and much more grounded: can we move capital faster, can we reduce costs, can we eliminate friction in payments, can we scale without breaking compliance frameworks.

That’s the real discussion. And once those problems start getting solved, the label becomes irrelevant. The technology doesn’t disappear, it just fades into the background. The same way nobody talks about the internet as a separate thing anymore, even though everything runs on it.

What makes CZ’s perspective more interesting is the context it comes from. He talked about writing most of his book while in prison, with only 15 minutes a day on a shared computer. No constant market noise, no Twitter, no price charts, just time to think without distraction. And instead of coming out of that experience more cautious or distant from the industry, he doubled down on building. Education platforms, startup incubation, focus on Web3, AI, biotech. Not trading cycles, not chasing narratives, but focusing on systems that will exist beyond any single market phase. That kind of shift usually signals something deeper. When someone who has already seen the peak of the exchange business starts focusing on infrastructure and education, it’s rarely случайно.

At the same time, a large part of the market still feels stuck in a much simpler mindset. There’s a lot of focus on tokens, short-term movements, “what’s next,” and which narrative is about to pump. And while that works for trading, it doesn’t really say much about where the industry is heading. Because if the word “crypto” действительно disappears, then the whole framing changes. It stops being about individual assets and starts being about how systems connect, how capital flows between them, and how technologies like AI begin to interact with financial rails that happen to be blockchain-based. At that point, crypto isn’t a niche anymore, it’s infrastructure. Invisible, slightly boring on the surface, but absolutely essential underneath.

There’s also a bit of irony in all of this. CZ mentioned that bear markets are where the strongest projects are built, and from my experience, that’s one of the most accurate observations in this space. When the noise disappears and attention drops, that’s when real work actually happens. Fewer distractions, fewer opportunists, more focus on things that will still matter in five or ten years. So when he says that the word “crypto” might disappear, I don’t hear it as something dramatic or controversial. I hear it as a natural progression of any technology that succeeds. It stops being a headline and starts being a foundation. And maybe the real shift we’re witnessing right now isn’t about prices or cycles, but about the moment when this entire space quietly becomes part of the system we stop noticing altogether.
