When I say that the future is already upon us, no one believes me, and this stems from the fact that our minds have the ability to project our dreams into reality(with some limitations), but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. Likewise, Post-Quantum Cryptography(PQC) is no different. For a long time, we’ve heard and read about this technology, and it was considered impossible to implement due to its variables and uncertainties... In short, if you do some research, you’ll see that this future and this “delusion,” as it was considered until recently; is already upon us, with big tech companies launching their post-quantum technologies; as a result, it won’t be long before every classical system passes the baton to quantum systems. In practice, this refers to a new technological paradigm emerging to address the end of the era of classical computing as we know it, where quantum computing will become powerful enough to become part of our lives. As such, it will be no different with cryptocurrencies, and unlike some traditional technologies, in the crypto space this process may be faster in terms of adoption but slower in terms of migration, in other words, it’s a double-edged sword: Where the perception of “speed” doesn't come from the technology itself, but from an explosive combination of external deadlines, concrete financial risks, and, ironically, the very complexity that can slow down the migration.... It is an inevitable, necessary process, and riding the wave will be the key.
With that introduction in mind, I'll write about Tessera(TSR), a bold social and technological experiment that aims to build a functional cryptocurrency using exclusively standard post-quantum cryptography, offering a glimpse into the future of cryptocurrencies, with a fair launch and an architecture based on Bitcoin that makes it familiar, while, on the other hand, its objectives take it into uncharted territory... In other words, it's a project that carries the mission of making post-quantum technology more accessible and easier to use, contributing to a smoother and more realistic transition.
What is Tessera(TSR) and why should it be Considered a Milestone?
As mentioned above, Tessera (TSR) is an experiment; in other words, it makes no promises, much less claims to be the ultimate solution to all the problems in the crypto world. Viewed from a more practical perspective, its technology is no longer the stuff of science fiction, but a foreseeable future that embodies the post-quantum concept not of denying the future, but of proactively preparing for it. It is an ecosystem capable of withstanding attacks from quantum computers, and this is precisely where the project stands... Thus, the milestone is not a promise but rather the path to be taken.
Tessera's mainnet was launched on August 12, 2026. It features post-quantum pillars that replace Bitcoin's cryptographic pillars with NIST-approved alternatives deemed resistant to quantum attacks, and its source code; available on GitHub... completely eliminates the use of elliptic curves. The project uses ML-DSA-44(FIPS 204) digital signatures, and its transactions are protected by this signature in accordance with the FIPS 204 standard. In more technical terms, this algorithm, based on lattice problems, is considered secure against attacks by quantum computers. Therefore, key transport and communication use ML-KEM-768(FIPS 203) to protect communication between nodes in the P2P network, where Tessera uses ML-KEM-768(FIPS 203) in the version 2 protocol handshake, replacing the elliptic curve-based key exchange of BIP324, ensuring that the communication channel is just as secure as the transactions. Finally, its hash function belongs to the SHA-3 family and is the standard for all hashing operations, including block and transaction identifiers, Merkle trees, and, crucially, the proof-of-work, which uses SHA-3-256d... the project’s operational algorithm.
Why Future-Proofing Matters?

With a robust and reliable architecture, Tessera(TSR) doesn’t reinvent the wheel. It retains exactly the same tried-and-true structure as Bitcoin(UTXO, Script, halving every 210,000 blocks, retargeting every 2,016 blocks). This means it is stable ecosystem with consensus logic that is already well-known and audited, but with updated quantum “ammunition.” Think of it as if the current classical era were transported into a world where quantum computing is on the horizon, paving the way for a new era that will be crucial for future cryptocurrency projects. Specifically, its code is clean and focused; it has completely removed vulnerable libraries(such as the libsecp256k1 elliptic curve library) and standardized everything on SHA-3 and FIPS algorithms, making the codebase more robust, specialized, and up-to-date for the future.

Protection Against “Store Now, Decrypt Later”: Today, hackers steal encrypted data to decrypt it in the future using quantum computers. Since Tessera already uses post-quantum cryptography, any data(or transaction) stolen today will remain secure even 10 or 20 years from now.
Immunity to Quantum Attacks: While Bitcoin and other traditional cryptocurrencies will become vulnerable once powerful quantum computers exist, Tessera(TSR) is inherently immune, using ML-DSA-44 and ML-KEM-768; NIST-standard algorithms specifically designed to resist quantum mathematics.
Secure Communication Channel: It’s not just the coins that are secure. P2P transactions use ML-KEM-768, meaning that communication between network nodes is also protected against quantum interception; a feature that Bitcoin will only implement in future upgrades.
It's not all Sunshine and Rainbows?
Yes, my friends, security comes at a price, and that price varies and increases according to the size of the data in a block. That being the case, the developer is clear in his statements: It’s impossible to talk about Tessera without addressing its main “disadvantage,” which, in this case, shouldn’t be considered a disadvantage but rather a consequence. However, for the enemies of progress, post-quantum security comes at a price, and that price is measured in bytes. An ML-DSA-44 signature entry is 3,732 bytes, compared to the mere 104 bytes of Bitcoin’s ECDSA.
And yes…
The impact is direct: A TSR transaction is approximately 17x larger than a Bitcoin transaction, and applying this to a hypothetical scenario with equal network congestion, transaction fees will be proportionally higher. Just as the developer himself honestly states: “Nothing about the signature scheme is free,” and having a fully quantum, functional, and secure ecosystem is a utopia that will be realized in a golden age, a time when the entire planet, along with its governments, will embrace quantum technology.
Today? There is a real cost to post-quantum security.

According to the developer, the *coinbase* output of the genesis block is an OP_RETURN that is provably impossible to spend. What does this mean? Simply put, it means that the 50 TSR in block 0(a very small amount) do not exist and cannot be claimed by anyone, not even the developer. In practical terms, the Tessera(TSR) chain starts with a difficulty of 1, following the reference used by Bitcoin’s genesis block... Is intentional, meaning that a standard CPU can find a block in just a few minutes, until the difficulty adjusts to its appropriate level. As a result, no one needed specialized equipment ready right from day one.
