Personal rebranding: Changing my Instagram strategy

Personal rebranding: Changing my Instagram strategy

By PierreL | Content For Creators | 10 Apr 2021

As I explained in this post, I need to rethink how I post content online in order to be more consistent and to build a following of people who will know what to expect from my social media accounts.

The first platform I will tackle is Instagram, because it's the easiest one.

As a reminder, here is the description of my Instagram accounts:

  • My main one, where I post my wildlife photography, some random photos, teasers for my Youtube videos, some of the same funny bits I post on Youtube and some "exclusives".
  • My "Albert and Elizabeth" one, where I post travel pictures.
  • My "Plastic in Nature" one, where I post pictures of plastic in nature and call out the companies responsible for manufacturing and selling said plastic.

Albert and Elizabeth and Plastic in nature will remain untouched, because they already have an actual concept that I'm sticking to. Plastic in nature has been hibernating for a while simply because I don't go out in nature as much anymore since covid started. I don't travel either, but I still have a good backlog of pictures of Albert and Elizabeth that I haven't posted yet so I'm covered for a few months.

The biggest question was about my main account. What should I do with it? My handle is @plizet.video, but I mostly post pictures. I use it to advertise videos I post on Youtube, but I don't post there that much anymore. I have some fun creating short videos aimed for social media once in a while, but I can just post these on Twitter. What I enjoy the most is wildlife photography and videography, so I decided to focus my Instagram account on this instead.

I'm not planning on making a living out of this, but if I can get some kind of gig opportunity some day thanks to this account dedicated to one of my passions, then it's an added bonus.

This also removes some pressure of wondering whether or not I should post this or that, and should I create something specifically for Instagram, and do people care about my animal portraits, and why am I posting so many photos when my handle has "video" in it, and so on. From now on, if you follow me there, it's because you're expecting to see wildlife images. I may, once in a while, post some other kind of photography if something else inspires me, but it's very rarely the case, and 99.9% of my account will be wildlife photo and video content.

I also changed my handle to @pierre__lizet. This is purposefully not content specific, so I'm not stuck behind a handle that wrongly advertises a specific type of content. It actually has two purposes: sticking my name next to my content, and allowing me to completely change the way I manage my account if I want to someday, without having to change my handle again.

I will also start posting more, making it a more active account, now that it's bound to be consistent. Again, the idea is to associate my online presence to specific types of content, and now that I've decided on an angle, it's time to push it forward as much as possible. I also have a few ideas of businesses to launch that would appeal to nature lovers, so building a following around that might be useful in the long run, but my main goal on Instagram is definitely not to make money, it is simply to keep doing what I love and share it with other people who love the same thing. And, if I can learn and/or teach at the same time, by getting comments from other wildlife photographers, then it's even better.

Paradoxically, I feel free now that I'm restricted.
