Filmmaking 101: Seamless transitions

Filmmaking 101: Seamless transitions

By PierreL | Content For Creators | 6 Mar 2020

Hi all,

Today I wanted to share a video trick with you, that's fairly easy to do and yet results in a pretty cool effect of seamless transition. Let's talk about this video:

This is a clip form a longer video that I'm working on at the moment, but I wanted to focus on this specific part because of how the final result looks like. Indeed, it looks like the person just keeps running and the floor is just magically changing under their feet, and it was really easy to do. This might seem too easy or obvious for some people, but hopefully it will be helpful and interesting for others.

So, how did I get to this result? Here's a list of simple steps to reproduce such an effect.

1. Choose the frame ending your first shot.

2. Overlay your second shot on top of your first shot, and try to find a matching frame to start it at. I had to reframe/rescale some of these shots to have them match more seamlessly. The easiest way to make sure your frames match is to play with the opacity of the second shot, as shown below:

3. Sound design always helps blending everything in together so think about that as well.

4. If the video is intended for social media like Twitter or Instagram, try to match the very last frame of the video with the very first, so that it loops smoothly indefinitely.

I hope this helped!

Until next time, stay creative, see you!
