Why Creators are Leaving YouTube

By Debesh Choudhury | Writing and Life | 16 Aug 2021

A couple of months ago, I found a video by a content creator on Odysee.Com. He permanently deleted all his videos in his YouTube channel to make Odysee.Com the exclusive digital space where he now posts his content.

More and more content creators are quitting YouTube to make Odysee.Com their default content publishing platform.

Let’s listen and read what this particular video content creator has to say.

--------------------------------------

Why did the content creator leave YouTube?

He speaks openly in a video shared on Odysee.Com and YouTube about why he permanently left YouTube.

“I deleted my YouTube channel. And I just feel so good right now. It feels so good to be free from YouYube.”
said the content creator.

And he is Kelvin Shadewing. He creates open-source software and is active in the domain of gaming development. In fact, Kelvin deleted all videos from his YouTube channel. He now posted the video announcing his permanent shifting to Odysee.Com.

He further said,
“I am just sick of Google. I am sick of their craps. I am sick of the way they treat the creators. I am sick of the fact that on YouTube, videos are not the product. The viewers are. You are. You are the product.”

THIS IS THE END; Kelvin Shadewing posted his last video on YouYube, source: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mdcXB95qPk4

What is wrong with YouTube for the new creators?

There are many wrong things on YouTube. There are more conditions than freedom. From day one, YouTube wanted to control the creators. There are funny rules and codes of conduct.

  • You need a minimum number of followers to have a custom channel name.
  • You need a minimum number of followers to stream live videos.

These two rules are the funniest and most unacceptable. How can a new content creator get followers after joining? YouTube wants that new creator should try hard to get followers! Otherwise, they won’t be eligible to do the very basics on YouTube!

Thus, the content creators have to wait to get a custom channel name and do live streaming. New creators really don’t know when they would be eligible to monetize?

--------------------------------------

What is wrong with YouTube’s monetization model?

The monetization policy of YouTube is not transparent. As a creator, you would never know what is happening in the background. Even the top-ranking YouTubers don’t get a transparent report about their earnings and how much YouTube keeps as the owner.

These are some of the questionable points of YouTube’s monetization.

  1. A creator must have a minimum number of followers to be eligible to monetize his/her video content.
  2. The content is not the product, but you and viewers are the product.
  3. YouTube collects users’ personal data and sells it to third parties.
  4. YouTube shows advertisements over your videos to earn money.
  5. YouTube keeps 50 percent or more of the earnings.
  6. There is no transparent report of your earnings.

Most content creators are on YouTube because the video platform was the first prominent platform since 2008. Now, there are many alternative video content sharing platforms. They don’t put so many constraints on the creators.

--------------------------------------

What is wrong with YouTube’s censoring policy?

As a platform, YouTube makes the creators accept their not so transparent policies on content censoring. These are the most common problems creators face on YouTube.

  1. YouTube censors content based on their undisclosed censoring policy.
  2. YouTube often filters/deletes comments on videos that the creator of the particular video content may not even know.
  3. YouTube deletes channels if the opinions don’t match with their political, geosocial, and socio-economical standpoints.
  4. YouTube is not a supporter of freedom of speech.

--------------------------------------

Examples of censorship by YouTube

In the past, there were many examples of funny and oppressive censorship by YouTube. In most instances, censorship was either due to the big tech’s deliberate support for proprietary software or their supporting policy of binary political narratives.

For example, one of the former contributing editors of the Linux Journal, Bryan Lunduke had faced filtering of his videos on open-source software.

To the best of my knowledge and belief, I know that Bryan Lunduke had sent queries to the YouTube service helpdesk, and they replied with a funny reason. The videos were censored due to the word “Linux” many times in Bryan’s content!

The censorship of tech content is ridiculous. So, that is how Bryan Lunduke permanently left YouTube for settling on Odysee.Com.

Not to mention how many YouTube channels were deleted after the US Presidential Election 2020 result was declared. As per the news8000+ YouTube channels were deleted that propagated opinions on alleged election fraud and against the elected party.

YouTube seems to be a promoter of one and only one narrative that the Big Techs support. So, that is how many YouTubers are now moving to Odysee.Com.

Predictive conclusion

More and more content creators are choosing Odysee.Com as an alternative content publishing platform.

Many creators post parallel content on YouTube as well as Odysee.

Some creators post video content first on Odysee and share it on YouTube afterward.

Some brave creators permanently move out of YouTube and make Odysee their default content publishing platform.

The future appears to be bright for content creators on Odysee.Com.

Consider creating an account on Odysee.Com

Odysee.Com is a new video content publishing and sharing platform by the team behind the LBRY (pronounced “library”) blockchain protocol built on a decentralized, blockchain-based network. Odysee is a true free video platform for all global Internet users. All verified users can monetize video content.
