Power of a LinkedIn Connection

Power of a LinkedIn Connection

By Debesh Choudhury | Writing and Life | 29 Jul 2025

LinkedIn is a professional media network.

“How has LinkedIn made a difference to your career?” asked Jeff Weiner long ago. It indeed made a difference.

  • Although the privilege of a LinkedIn member is limited, the power of a LinkedIn connection is enormous.

I experienced it in the past.

  • LinkedIn made me smile without writing a post, even without giving a “like” to a post or writing comments to others' posts.

How did it happen?

It was pretty simple.

  • I just used to log in to LinkedIn regularly and connect with like-minded people in the vast members of the professional platform.

The professional connections of LinkedIn did the rest of the magic without spending anything from my pocket.

LinkedIn members are expected to focus on "Building a Culture of Compassion."

The possibility is tremendous if we utilize the powerful features of LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is one of the most appropriate places to get connected with your peers

Connect with like-minded people.

  • My field of interest is information security, optics, and photonics.

  • There are a large number of academicians and researchers in my field.

  • LinkedIn has provided me with an interface to get introduced to some of my less and unknown peers in the field.

  • I made a connection with some new people.

One such connection is from China, who is a renowned professor and researcher in holography and data security, Prof. Xiang Peng.

  • After a brief introduction through LinkedIn I and my Chinese peer started exchanging emails.

  • I came to know about an international conference which was to take place in China under his leadership.

It was the International Symposium on 3D Imaging, Metrology and Data Security. The symposium celebrated the International Year of Light.

The conference was held at the Ming Wah International Convention Center, Shenzhen.

  • I was invited as a member of the international program committee.

  • I was also invited to present a paper. I visited China in September 2015.

It was a wonderful experience visiting Shenzhen, China, and meeting many eminent personalities in the research field of applied optics and holography.

You can learn about the visits of your peers.

LinkedIn is a place where you may come to know about the itinerary of your peers.

  • One renowned professor of physics from the University of Connecticut, Prof. Chandrashekhar Roychoudhuri, was visiting India in September 2014 for an invited workshop in Chennai, India.

  • When he kindly announced it in a LinkedIn update, I contacted him through LinkedIn mail. Later, we exchanged emails. Fortunately, he was taking a short stay in Kolkata (Calcutta) for a few days. I requested him to visit our college, and he kindly agreed.

Prof. Chandrasekhar Roychoudhuri interacting with the audience

  • We organized an extended interactive lecture session by him on “Urgency of Evolution Congruent Thinking” at the Salt Lake City Centre, Kolkata.

  • The lecture was well accepted by an audience of about 125 people, including faculty members, students, and a few eminent guests from the University of Calcutta.

  • The engagement was so deep that we had to extend the session beyond the planned duration.

LinkedIn shows meaningful networking opportunities.

  • All the above interactions happened without writing a post, or giving a “like,” or writing comments on others' posts.

Significant engagement starts with natural communication with our connections on LinkedIn

  • I have immensely benefited from the wonderful network of LinkedIn.

What else can you expect from a professional network?

Please write your experience as a short post or a detailed article.

Or, just write a short comment.
