Nvidia shares soared 3.1% on Wednesday following a report that Donald Trump could roll back controls on the export of artificial intelligence chips. The news sparked excitement across the tech sector. According to Bloomberg, the Trump administration is considering lifting restrictions imposed by the Biden administration, which would again allow shipments of advanced chips to China. This would be a key turning point in the ongoing tech war.

The stock market movement also boosted other manufacturers. Advanced Micro Devices rose 1.8% after reporting better-than-expected earnings and raising its sales guidance. However, it warned that current controls will reduce its annual revenue by $1.5 billion. The expectation of trade relaxation comes just as Nvidia faces an accounting adjustment: it will report a $5.5 billion inventory hit from H20 chips, designed for the Chinese market. Jefferies estimates a total revenue loss of close to $10 billion.

Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang estimated that the Chinese artificial intelligence chip market will reach $50 billion in a few years. He also questioned whether restrictions will serve to slow military advances in the region.

Meanwhile, Super Micro Computer reported solid results for the quarter but offered weak guidance. Some customers are reportedly postponing purchases due to the transition between Hopper chips and Nvidia's new Blackwell chips. The company, which assembles servers for AI chips, assured that it maintains "strong demand" in the medium term. Even so, its shares fell 1.4%. Broadcom, meanwhile, advanced 2.4%, joining the tech rally following the rumors.
