Starring: Basil Rathbone, Nigel Bruce, Marjorie Riordan

Director: Roy William Neill (UK)

Genre: Mystery

Availability: YouTube

Watch Quality   A

The YouTube version has top-notch video and audio quality for a classic film. Even with the British accents the dialogue is easy to understand.

Plot Summary

Mysterious agents of a European prince need Holmes to escort the royal heir back to claim his throne. Aboard ship, Holmes and Watson attempt to subvert plots of murder and theft.

Star Power   C+

Basil Rathbone plays Holmes with confidence and detachment. Nigel Bruce and Marjorie Riordan are charming each in their own ways, yet no one captivates.

Chill Factor   B-

There is nothing to ruin the mood here, though not much to stimulate it either. The half-hearted attempt at a romantic subplot fizzles out.

Mental Health Check   A-

Despite the morbid theme, this film does not place a high demand on your emotional energy. It is a fun and relaxing distraction.

Overall Grade   B-

Some of the dialogue feels contrived, but the essential elements of a Sherlock Holmes mystery remain intact. There is a lack of action, but the viewer's curiosity speeds the story along. The amusing characters and twist ending justify the time.
