While I have been a part or member of the r/cryptocurrency Reddit community for around a year I was not super active in it for a long time. The reason for this was because of how set in their ways the community could get about something and if you disagreed you would get downvoted to death. There was one segment of the crypto industry that they seemed to hate more than I knew someone could hate something... NFTs.
While they had let up in the last few months the vast majority of the people in the community were very vocal about the stupidity of NFTs and how it was all a shame and fad. Over the last 2-3 weeks though ohhhh how the times have changed and now when you go onto the page you see people hyping up the NFT that they were airdropped or talking about how NFTs are great now. There are even posts people have made pointing this very thing out and on those posts, it is rare to see anyone try to take a stance against NFTs.
I think that this is a great example of how even on forums in support of something you believe in like cryptocurrency always take what you hear with a grain of salt. When NFTs blew up there was an issue with people just taking jpegs and minting them and making scores of money without providing any sort of utility or even a purpose. You can see this as well with how Jack Dorsey's first tweet was sold for millions yet when the guy tried to resell the NFT people were not offering him anything remotely close to what he paid. I think that most people who really thought about it and were in it for the long haul realized this.
The r/cryptocurrency Reddit though never changed it tune until they started to get airdropped free NFTs and while it is good to see the mood change I think the way it has gone about shows the issue that people have with a lot of crypto communities and people. Instead of learning, engaging, and adapting a lot of the industry players are it is this way and only this way and everything else is wrong. This type of approach just pushes people away and causes them not to engage. Could this mark the beginning of a change in the community? I doubt it as I have seen people making crazy comments about there being too many Metaverses when really the whole idea is in its infancy. I hope I am wrong though and the community adapts. The whole reason for this post is so that people are aware that even in the most pro-crypto places there are still some basic issues that eventually will have to be addressed and just because a huge community is hyping a project or a token does not mean that it is good or even decent.
