When I decided to move from Houston, Texas to Washington, D.C. I was excited to see what a new place had to offer me. As a life long Texan the furtherest I had moved from Houston ever was College Station about an hour and a half northwest. As excited as I was I had one concern and it wasn’t the typical concerns of moving. It had to deal with my health and how my body would be able to handle it...
Having had the 3 neurosurgeries I have had and the two serious traumatic brain injuries before that I have to be very careful about my health. I really had to look into not only where I was moving due to weather but also where I was going to exactly live. I needed to be somewhere where things were easily accessible be it food, clothing or a pharmacy. When my roommate and I settled on the place we did I knew I would be okay from that standpoint.
The weather though has been a major battle that I seem to be winning then bam 180 and I’m losing and the other way around. Since I’ve moved up here we have had 3 or 4 sunny days and that’s it. The people I have met and talk to have discussed how weird the weather has been here so far this year. These constant storms we are having has driven my head crazy. Just when I think okay I dodged pain from a storm since it has moved it it gets me on the way out. That did not even happen to me in Texas! The biggest thing though my head has thus far been able to adapt to is the constantly high barometric pressure. It seems like everyday since I moved here it’s been above 30 and even worse is that it seems to really like to hover around 30.2. For me that’s extremely high as in Texas I would have massive headaches when I got above 30.1. One day the pressure was so high it was 30.32 and I was shocked I was still somewhat functioning.
Its hard to describe and relate to people in a new city when you are having to deal with this. When the pain is incredibly bad and you cannot seem to catch a break. I have at least really improved on getting out of bed and forcing myself to move around. With weather like this though you cannot exactly go on a walk or run as that would end up with a big wipeout. The friends I do have up here are all things considered new friends and opening up this painful past of mine with the injuries and illness is hard. I’ve been slowly able to do it but it’s not something I like or want to do.
Hopefully my body continues to adjust and adapt to the weather facing it. I would not wish this on anyone as the isolation with the pain is bad enough as it is.
I hope everyone is staying safe and warm out there!
