Q Trend + Big Beluga System: How Free Indicators Outperform Premium Tools

By Bkcruzade | Christyan Calderin | 13 Jun 2025

  The Problem Every Trader Faces

How many times have you entered a trade based on what seemed like a perfect signal, only to watch the market move against you within minutes? If you're like most traders, this has happened more times than you'd care to admit.

The issue isn't with indicators themselves, but using them in isolation. Sideways markets destroy trading accounts faster than anything else, and most indicators generate constant false signals when there's no clear trend.

After months of testing different combinations, I discovered a system that solves this problem using two completely free indicators available on TradingView: Q Trend by Tarasenko and Big Beluga's Trend Filter.

    Why These Indicators Work Together

Q Trend by Tarasenko: The Momentum Detector

Q Trend excels at detecting trend beginnings and momentum shifts. Its strength lies in identifying when price is gaining or losing strength. However, like any momentum indicator, it struggles in sideways markets where it generates multiple false signals.

The signals we're interested in are:

- **Strong Buy**: Maximum bullish strength

- **Strong Sell**: Maximum bearish strength

- **Buy**: Good bullish momentum

- **Sell**: Good bearish momentum

All signals work with the same logic, though Strong signals typically generate higher profits.

Big Beluga's Trend Filter: The Perfect Filter

Here's where our savior comes in. Big Beluga's Trend Filter does exactly what its name suggests: it filters signals based on the predominant trend direction. Its line acts as a dynamic support/resistance level that adapts to market conditions.

When price is above the Trend Filter line, we're in bullish territory. When it's below, the context is bearish.

   The Complete System: Specific Rules

    Initial Setup

-   Timeframes. : 30 minutes and 1 hour (optimal for swing trading)

-   Indicators. : Q Trend and Trend Filter with default settings

-   Recommended pairs. : Any pair with decent volatility (major cryptocurrencies)

    LONG Entry Rules

  Mandatory conditions:

1. Q Trend must show **Buy or Strong Buy** signal

2. Price must **break above and close above** the Trend Filter line on the same or following candle

3. This combination indicates the start of a new bullish trend

**Important note:** Strong Buy signals generate higher profits, but regular Buy signals also work with the same breakout confirmation logic.

Stop Loss: Immediately below the Trend Filter line we just broke above

    SHORT Entry Rules

  Mandatory conditions:

1. Q Trend must show **Sell or Strong Sell** signal

2. Price must **break below and close below** the Trend Filter line on the same or following candle

3. This combination indicates the start of a new bearish trend

**Important note:** Strong Sell signals generate higher profits, but regular Sell signals also work with the same breakout confirmation logic.

Stop Loss: Immediately above the Trend Filter line we just broke below

Exit Management: The Key to Success

This is where this system differs from other basic approaches:

  Partial Take Profit at 2%:

- Close a percentage of your position when you reach 2% profit

- This secures gains and reduces psychological stress

- Move your stop loss to breakeven to protect the rest of the position

  Final exit with reverse signal:

- If you have a LONG open, close when Q Trend gives a Sell signal (any type)

- If you have a SHORT open, close when Q Trend gives a Buy signal (any type)

- This strategy allows capturing complete trend movements

    Why This System Works

    1. Trend Change Capture

Q Trend signals are special because they usually appear **against the current trend**, indicating the possible start of a new trend. When price manages to break the Trend Filter line after a signal, it confirms that the new trend has enough strength to establish itself.

    2. Signal Hierarchy by Probability

Although all signals work with the same logic, there's a clear hierarchy:

- **Strong Buy/Sell**: Higher probability and profit potential

- **Buy/Sell**: Good probability, moderate profits

- Trend Filter breakout confirmation is mandatory for all

    3. High Profit Potential

By entering at the beginning of new trends (not continuation), the profit potential is significantly higher. You're capturing movements from almost the start, not joining late to already established trends.

    4. Logical Risk Management

If price crosses back through the Trend Filter line in the opposite direction, it means the new trend failed to establish, validating the exit.

   Practical System Examples

    Successful LONG Example

Imagine DOGEUSDT on 1-hour timeframe:

- Price: 1.0830, **below** Trend Filter at 1.0845

- Q Trend generates **Strong Buy** (counter-trend signal)

- Price breaks and closes above Trend Filter at 1.0850

- **Entry**: 1.0850 (breakout confirmation)

- **Stop Loss**: 1.0840 (below the just-broken Trend Filter)

- **Partial take profit**: 1.0867 (2% gain)

- **Stop loss moved to breakeven**: 1.0850

- **Final exit**: 1.0920 when Q Trend gives Sell signal

**Result:** New bullish trend captured from the beginning + 70 pips total.

    Rejected Signal Example

- Price: 1.0830, below Trend Filter at 1.0845

- Q Trend generates Strong Buy

- Price **fails to break** the Trend Filter, stays at 1.0840

- **DON'T enter** because breakout confirmation is missing

- Price effectively falls back down, avoiding a loss

    The Key: Patience for Confirmation

Most traders would enter with just the Strong Buy signal, but Trend Filter breakout confirmation is what differentiates winning signals from losing ones.

   Common Mistakes to Avoid

    1. Entering without breakout confirmation

This is the most common mistake. Seeing any Q Trend signal and entering immediately without waiting for price to break the Trend Filter. Breakout confirmation is mandatory for all signals.

    2. Impatience with the breakout

Sometimes price "touches" the Trend Filter line but doesn't close above/below. The temptation is to enter anyway, but close confirmation is crucial.

    3. Not respecting the stop loss

If price crosses back through the Trend Filter, the new trend failed. Keeping the position hoping "it will come back" destroys accounts.

    4. Not taking partial profits

Greed kills more accounts than fear. Securing 2% when available lets you sleep peacefully and let the rest run without stress.

    5. Moving stops prematurely

The Trend Filter is your guide for stop loss. Moving it based on emotions or "hunches" destroys the system's logic.

    6. Changing timeframes impulsively

30 minutes and 1 hour are optimized for this system. Jumping to 5 minutes due to impatience or 4 hours for conservatism completely changes the dynamics.

   Advanced Risk Management

    Position Sizing

- Never risk more than 1-2% of your account per trade

- Calculate size based on distance to stop loss

- If stop is too far, reduce size or wait for better opportunity

    Additional Filters

For more conservative traders, consider these extra filters:

- Avoid trading 30 minutes before and after high-impact news

- Don't trade on Fridays after 4:00 PM GMT (low volume)

- Confirm direction on higher timeframe (4h or daily)

    Trade Logging

Document each trade with:

- Entry screenshot

- Specific reason for entry

- Result and learnings

- This helps identify patterns in your performance

   System Optimizations

    For High Volatility Markets (Crypto)

- Consider partial take profit at 3-4% instead of 2%

- Keep wider stops to avoid noise

- Pay extra attention to news that can invalidate technical analysis

For Low Volatility Markets (Forex Majors)

- 2% partial take profit is ideal

- Can use slightly higher leverage

- Signals tend to be "cleaner" and more reliable

   Trading Psychology with This System

    Psychological Advantages

- **Clear rules eliminate doubt:** No subjective interpretation

- **Partial take profit reduces anxiety:** You always secure some profit

- **Logical stops reduce FOMO:** The market tells you when you're wrong

    Maintaining Discipline

- Never modify rules "on the fly"

- If you have a losing streak, review your execution, don't change the system

- Remember: consistency beats perfection

   Expected Results

This system isn't a magic money machine, but with discipline you can expect:

**Win rate:** 60-65% under normal market conditions

**Average Risk/Reward:** 1:2.5 considering partial take profit + runners

**Signals per week:** 6-15 depending on market volatility (including regular Buy/Sell signals increases frequency)

**Maximum drawdown:** 15-20% with proper risk management

   System Variations

    Conservative Version

- Only trade Strong Buy/Strong Sell signals

- Only operate on 1-hour timeframe

- Require 4-hour timeframe confirmation

- Partial take profit at 1.5%

    Balanced Version (Recommended)

- Trade all Buy/Sell signals with breakout confirmation

- Prioritize Strong signals for larger positions

- 30m and 1h timeframes

- Partial take profit at 2%

    Aggressive Version

- Trade all signals including 15-minute timeframe

- Larger positions on Strong signals

- Partial take profit at 3%

   Conclusion

The Q Trend + Big Beluga system proves you don't need expensive or complex indicators to succeed in trading. The key is combining complementary tools with specific rules and solid risk management.

Free indicators, when used correctly, can outperform many premium solutions. This system gives you a complete framework to take advantage of trends while minimizing the false signals that destroy most trading accounts.

Remember: the best system is one you can follow consistently. The rules are simple, but the discipline to follow them is what separates successful traders from those who quit.

**The next step?** Test this system on demo for at least one month before using real money. Document every trade and only adjust after having enough data to make informed decisions.

Successful trading isn't about finding the perfect indicator, but executing a proven system with unwavering discipline. This system gives you the tools; you provide the discipline.
