SOME NUMBERS ON THE FEDIVERSE - TERMS OF SERVICE - CHOICE OF A SERVER
If we compare it to mainstream social networks, the fediverse is totally irrelevant :-) one must be honest with oneself! While i’m writing there are 4617740 accounts. But many are not even active. A count of active users can be found here https://fediverse.party/en/fediverse and indicates 1325935 active users.
Compare even with the most unknown of the centralized social networks and you will see that the comparison is merciless. If you think of the big names as twitter instead, and I specifically exclude fb, we are on the order of 350 million against 4.6 million ... But I am optimistic: it only means that there is a lot of room for growth!
Each server sets its own terms of service which you must accept when opening your account. Given the slightly anarchic nature of the fediverse and since some servers can be thematic you will find everything; one of my favorite ToS is this from https://freespeechextremist.com/about

Simply fantastic for those who think that freedom of expression and personal responsibility are important. The part "If you do anything that makes me have to write an actual ToS, I will find you where you sleep." is priceless.
Which server to choose? You can start from the fediverse.network link to explore some of them. If you want a generalist server with many users, put the servers in order of users and the first ones that appear are the most used ones; the top 10 have more than 100,000 users.
WHY FEDIVERSE IS IMPORTANT FOR FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION
Someone at this point may have wondered why he should make an account on the fediverse. The first question you should ask yourself is whether you are concerned with freedom of expression. If the answer is no then I give you bad news: you have wasted precious time reading up to here, it is not a topic that may interest you; you can safely continue to use FB, twitter, instagram, Google services. Good surveillance and good moderation (aka censorship) to you.
If the answer is yes, there are two main reasons.
The first is that there are free opinions on the fediverse, often as many bullshit as it is normal, so you will have the opportunity to find ideas, information, articles and interesting sites. You will also have the opportunity to follow people banned from mainstream social media, posts that on other social networks would be immediately censored and run freely here. In short, it pays off first of all to you.
The second is that this area of freedom has a future only if its adoption is high: like all social networks, if it does not reach a critical number of people, it loses its meaning and risks becoming an echo chamber. If you think it is good for you too the existence of an area in which free opinions can circulate and that these opinions should be known by the greatest number of users then I think you must use the fediverse. The more users there are, the more it is possible to circulate ideas and opinions different from those that are allowed and admitted by the centralized social networks.
I personally have only kept a twitter account and i have closed the remaining centralized social networks. I will close also Twitter when the fediverse has reached an important number of users. I'm still thinking about what this figure is :-).
