My top 5 songs of the week

By Shattered | cesar cantante | 24 Jan 2021

Hey guys! i hope you are having a great day/afternoon/evening!

Have you ever happened that some weeks/days you only want to hear a certain genre of music, or even just one artist? Well, this week has been a week to listen Metal for me, just random metal songs from a random metal playlist. And for that effect, i'll bring you 5 of the songs i loved (this is not a top 5 of the best of the best, it is the ones i loved of the random playlist i played on a certain music platform :D) this week.

5. Stryper - Soldiers under command (Isaiah 53:5, 1985)

What? a christian band? Yeah, absolutely! Here in Chile is known as "white metal", anf it's funny because for christians it's "too metal", and for metal fans is "too christian", either way you have to recognize that Michael Harrison Sweet has one of the best voices of their time, and they have nothing to envy from other bands, try to pay less attention of the bibles they toss to the audience, and more atention to their sound, that impregnates you with lots of energy to keep your day going. Great song.

4. Sepultura - Ratamahatta (roots, 1996)

This is one of the few "tribal-ish" metal sounds you'll ever found in your life. The energy slap that you recieve is incredible, Besides,  there's great musicians involver, like Carlinhos Brown on vocals and Korn drummer David Silveria on percussion as guest artists. This one helped me to get more energy to do my job (i work in construction, strenght related activity), so this song is a go if you need to pull all your power doing excercises or doing stregnth feats :D.

3. Meshuggah - Clockworks (The Violent Sleep of Reason, 2016)

Who doesn't listen one of the greatest metal bands in history? I listen Meshuggah since i was a kid, so it was natural for me to put it here, and that's the reason i don't place this one as 2nd nor 1st place (because bias :v). Actually i remember, in my metalhead years listening and screaming loudly the songs Neurotica and Elastic, i was so happy at that time listening to that although everyone else looked my like a f*cking weirdo lmao, but that's ok, now i keep listening to them, but with earphones 🤣. This song in particular, i love the complexity of the lyrics. Check this out:

"Dismantling the clockwork that makes me the cynic
Pallet, wheel and click
The properties of my indifference
Reverse-engineering what makes it tick
Dissecting the finetuned mechanism
Rack and barrel, spring and pin
Its synchronous characteristics
To kill what makes it spin"

Beautifuly written.

2. The Devin Townsend Project - Earth Day (Ziltoid live Royal Halbert hall, 2015)

Well, to be fair, i can put here any TDTP song from that album, and Heavy Devy will always be on my top 3 of music, that mad lad have it all: Range, technique, energy, performance skills, and the best of him, is that he sounds way more powerful and better live, instead of the rest of the bands that sounds lesser than their albums (except for Meshuggah, they sounds exactly like the album on live). I always thought that Devin Townsend records his album as an skeleton, to do whatever he feels on live, because is almost never the same, all hi concerts are really different from each other, performing it by himself with his band or with Annekke ( i love her btw <3)

Lyrics:

"Eat your beets, recycle...recycle
Don't eat your beets, recycle...recycle

The message is, "There is no message"

Babe, you better not ever think
Staring into the drink... get out of my mind
Cause I may not be the one to say
Is there no other way we could do this another day?

I saw God

She said, "If you don't believe me, guaranteed. You'll never leave me"
On your way, and out of my time
But I didn't even know if it was true or just a result of chemicals

Shut up and think of something more important to say
Sometimes I think that in every straight there's
Something or nothing a whole either way it's a way
It's a way, it's a way, it's a way, it's a way
Earth day, earth day, earth day, earth day
It's a way, it's a way, it's a way, it's a way
Earth day, earth day, earth day, earth day

It's like your birthday, it's on Earth Day
Like a child you're born again, little child you're bored again
It's your worst fucking day, it's on Earth Day
Little lies to cover up...please make your mind up

(Eat your beets, recycle...recycle)
(Don't eat your beets, recycle...recycle)

Man overboard (I'm so far away)
Man overboard (I'm so far...)
But fuck it! I really don't care
Fuck! Listen to me! Just shut the fuck up!

Peace, love, joy
Man overboard (I'm so far)
Hate, hell, war
Hate, love, love, hate, love, hate...destruction!

So just shut your face and take a seat
Because after all, you're just talking meat...and music?
Well, it's just entertainment folks.

Sometimes I think that I really have something moreto say
Sometimes I think that in every straight there's
Forgive me for saying it blows either way
It's a way, it's a way, it's a way, it's a way, it's a way

It's your birthday, it's on Earth Day
Like a child you're born again, little child you're cold again
It's your worst fucking day, it's on Earth Day
Little child your time is up...please turn the heat up

You need your beets, you recycle
Don't eat your beets...recycle

Man overboard...I'm so far away..."

1. Rainbow - Stargazer (Rising, 1976)

Should i add anything else, besides the song, about this? This one, is definitely my favourite song ever! It is so well written, and the story is mindblowing!

This may be a slow song for those used to listen to faster bands, but slow doesn't mean weak, this song is one of the most powerful songs and with more energy i've listen in my entire life. I'll close with this: I you haven't listen Rainbow, you are doing a diservice to yourself, Besides, Ronnie James Dio is the Lead singer, what else can you ask? Just listen the song, and let your mind blow.

Lyrics:

"High noon, oh I'd sell my soul for water
Nine years worth of breakin' my back
There's no sun in the shadow of the wizard
See how he glides, why he's lighter than air?
Oh I see his face!

Where is your star?
Is it far, is it far, is it far?
When do we leave?
I believe, yes, I believe

In the heat and the rain
With whips and chains
To see him fly
So many died
We build a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
Just to see him fly
But don't know why
Now where do we go?

Hot wind, moving fast across the desert
We feel that our time has arrived
The world spins, while we put his dream together
A tower of stone to take him straight to the sky
Oh I see his face!

Where is your star?
Is it far, is it far, is it far?
When do we leave?
Hey, I believe, I believe

In the heat and the rain
With whips and chains
Just to see him fly
Too many died
We build a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
To see him fly
But we don't know why
Ooh, now where do we go

All eyes see the figure of the wizard
As he climbs to the top of the world
No sound, as he falls instead of rising
Time standing still, then there's blood on the sand
Oh I see his face!

Where was your star?
Was it far, was it far
When did we leave?
We believed, we believed, we believed

In heat and rain
With the whips and chains
To see him fly
So many died
We built a tower of stone
With our flesh and bone
To see him fly

But why
In all the rain
With all the chains
Did so many died
Just to see him fly

Look at my flesh and bone
Now, look, look, look, look,
Look at his tower of stone
I see a rainbow rising
Look there, on the horizon
And I'm coming home, I'm coming home, I'm coming home

Time is standing still
He gave back my will
Ooh ooh ooh ooh
Going home
I'm going home

My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
The place I've known
But it's not home
Ooh

Take me back
He gave me back my will
Ooh ooh ooh ooh

Going home
I'm going home

My eyes are bleeding
And my heart is leaving here
The place I've known
But it's not home
Ooh

Take me back, take me back
Back to my home ooh, ooh, ooh"
