But one dog did more than understand commands. She understood language.

Meet Chaser, a female border collie whose intelligence astonished scientists and reshaped how we think about animal cognition. Nicknamed “the smartest dog in the world,” Chaser learned the names of 1,022 individual objects - the largest tested memory of any nonhuman animal in history.

Other smart working dogs have been able to learn dozens of commands.
Chaser learned over a thousand words - and the meaning behind them.

In one test, she was shown several known toys plus one she had never seen before. When asked for the mystery object by a new word (e.g., “Pick up the frib”), Chaser selected the unfamiliar item through logical deduction.

This is a cognitive ability known as fast-mapping (as I highlighted above) famously observed in toddlers learning language.
So Chaser essentially proved that dogs are capable of far more abstract thinking than previously believed. Impressive!

They are bred to follow complex human instructions during herding.
