Feed a Stray From Your Sofa: Free Ways to Help Cats and Dogs Online

Imagine being able to help feed a hungry shelter dog, support cats waiting for homes, or help stray animals in another part of the world without reaching for your credit card.

It sounds a little too good to be true.

But there are now several free online ways to help shelter/stray animals, using something most of us already have: our attention.

Some programs turn advertising revenue into charitable support. Others let you answer trivia questions, click a button or play a game, with participating organizations using the resulting revenue to support animals.

You won’t personally be delivering a bag of kibble to a kennel.

But your tiny online action can become part of something considerably bigger.

1. Answer a question and help feed shelter dogs

One of the simplest options is Freekibble.

The concept is almost comically easy.

Visit the website, answer a daily animal-related trivia question and click your answer.

That’s it!

You don’t even have to get the question right.

Freekibble says that each answer provides kibble and supplies to animal shelters to help feed and care for hungry dogs. Its current website reports that more than 6.9 billion pieces of kibble have been donated to hungry dogs and cats since the program began.

And the questions are updated regularly. At the time of writing, the site was displaying current October 2026 questions covering everything from dog sleeping positions to cat behavior.

That’s a pretty impressive return on a few seconds of your time.

2. Cats get their own free trivia

Cat lovers haven’t been forgotten.

Freekibble has a dedicated cat trivia program, where answering the daily question provides kibble and supplies to animal shelters caring for cats.

The current cat page explicitly says that playing helps feed and care for hungry cats.

So if you’re more comfortable around whiskers than wagging tails, you can make your daily click specifically about feline welfare.

And yes, you can get the answer wrong and still win.

Which is excellent news for anyone whose general-knowledge skills peaked during a particularly successful pub quiz in 1997.

3. Help shelter cats with litter too

Food isn’t the only thing shelters need.

Freekibble also has a program supporting litter donations for shelter cats.

That might sound less exciting than food, but anyone who has ever owned a cat knows that litter is hardly an optional extra.

GreaterGood currently lists Freekibble among its free ways to give and specifically describes the program as providing kibble, litter and other supplies to animal shelters.

So your daily online action can potentially help with some of the less glamorous — but essential — costs of looking after shelter cats.

4. Click for Paws

Here’s another wonderfully simple idea.

Click for Paws, operated through GreaterGood, allows visitors to click on featured animals and support animal-welfare programs without making a donation themselves.

GreaterGood currently lists Click for Paws among its “Free Ways to Give”, alongside Freekibble and its other free activities.

The important distinction is that you shouldn’t think of one click as literally putting one meal into one animal’s bowl.

Instead, free clicks form part of a wider advertising-supported charitable model.

GreaterGood’s terms explain that its free Click-to-Give actions are funded by sponsor advertising, with the advertising money going to its charitable partners.

In other words, your attention has value.

And somebody is willing to turn a little of that value into help for animals.

5. Play games and help animals

If answering trivia questions isn’t your idea of entertainment, there’s another possibility.

GreaterGood currently operates Games That Give, offering free online games including puzzles and crosswords.

Its current Play to Give page says that a percentage of advertising revenue from gameplay is given to causes supporting people, pets and the planet.

So instead of feeling guilty about playing an online puzzle when you should probably be doing something productive, you can occasionally make the procrastination charitable.

That’s surely progress.

The same GreaterGood page also lists Trivia to Give, providing another free way to participate through daily questions.

6. Help stray cats and dogs in Indonesia

If you want to look beyond the better-known US-based programs, there’s an interesting option called PawPaw Portal.

Its concept is slightly different.

The platform says its free game uses advertising revenue to support stray cats and dogs, with partner shelters receiving help with food, shelter, medical care, vaccinations and rescue work.

The site explicitly says:

“Free forever.”

It also says there is no sign-up fee and nothing comes out of the player’s pocket.

There is, however, an important geographical qualification.

PawPaw Portal is an Indonesian animal-welfare organization and currently highlights Indonesian shelter partners, including organizations caring for cats and dogs in Jakarta.

So this isn’t a worldwide food-distribution program.

But someone sitting in Britain, Canada, Australia or elsewhere can potentially use the platform to help generate support for animals in Indonesia.

That’s a rather remarkable thing to be able to do from a sofa thousands of miles away.

How can something free actually pay for animal food?

This is the question many people quite reasonably ask.

After all, if you’re not paying anything, where does the money come from?

The answer is generally advertising and sponsorship.

Think about what happens when you visit a free website.

You see advertisements.

Advertisers pay the website or platform because they want people to see those advertisements.

Some charitable websites then direct advertising revenue towards their animal-welfare programs.

GreaterGood explicitly states that its free Click-to-Give actions are supported by sponsor advertising and that the money from those advertisements goes to its charitable partners.

PawPaw Portal uses a similar basic principle, explaining that advertisements viewed while playing become funding for animal welfare.

So you’re not creating food out of thin air.

You’re effectively allowing a tiny amount of advertising value generated by your attention to be redirected towards animals.

Does one click really make a difference?

Probably not in isolation.

That’s an important point.

It would be misleading to suggest that one person clicking a button once automatically feeds a hungry dog for a week.

The strength of these programs comes from scale.

One person clicks.

Then another.

Then another.

Eventually, thousands or millions of people are participating.

Freekibble’s reported total of more than 6.9 billion pieces of kibble illustrates what can happen when a tiny individual action is repeated on a huge scale.

It’s the charitable equivalent of dropping one grain of rice into a bucket.

One grain isn’t much.

A billion grains are another matter entirely.

You don’t have to live near the animals

That’s perhaps the most interesting part.

Animal lovers often want to help but face an obvious problem:

“The shelter is nowhere near me.”

Online programs remove that geographical barrier.

You could be sitting in Manchester, Melbourne, Montreal or Miami and still participate in a program supporting shelter or stray animals elsewhere.

You don’t have to own a pet.

You don’t need specialist animal-care skills.

You don’t need a car.

And, with the program described above, you don’t necessarily need money either.

All you need is an internet connection and a few spare moments.

Try the two-minute animal welfare habit

You could even make it part of your daily routine.

While drinking your morning coffee:

One: Answer the Freekibble dog question.

Two: Answer the Freekibble cat question.

Three: Make a free Click for Paws action.

Four: If you’ve got another minute, play a quick Games That Give puzzle.

That’s potentially only a couple of minutes.

Do it regularly and you’ve transformed a tiny piece of otherwise disposable screen time into an action that can support animal welfare.

But check the small print

There’s one important rule whenever you come across websites claiming that your clicks or games will help animals:

Check exactly how the program works.

Some websites genuinely offer free charitable actions.

Others may use a free trial to encourage paid subscriptions.

Some programs support animal welfare generally rather than guaranteeing that a particular click buys a particular amount of food.

And programs can change over time.

That’s why it’s worth checking the current website rather than relying on an old social-media post claiming that “ONE CLICK = ONE FREE MEAL!”

The resources in this article were checked against their current websites in October 2026, and I’ve deliberately excluded services where the free element didn’t clearly meet the article’s original goal.

The internet isn’t always useless

We’re often told that we spend too much time online.

And sometimes that’s absolutely true.

But the same technology that gives us endless videos, adverts, games and trivia can occasionally be turned into something surprisingly positive.

You can sit at home, click a button, answer a ridiculous question about cats, play a puzzle or watch an advert and potentially help generate support for animals that have nobody else to feed them.

No wallet required.

No plane ticket required.

No muddy boots required.

Just a few seconds of your time.

And somewhere, perhaps, a hungry cat gets another bowl of food.

Or a shelter dog gets another meal.

Or a stray animal gets the care it desperately needs.

Not bad for something you did while sitting on the sofa.
