It seems the term ‘Copycat’ can be applied literally according to a behavioral study published in the UK.

The study carried out by researchers from University of Lincoln and Nottingham Trent University threw up some interesting findings.

More than 3000 cat owners were asked questions relating to agreeableness, conscientiousness, extroversion, neuroticism and openness.

The study was essentially comparing cat owners parenting styles to those of human adults and their dependent children and the results provided some consistent data.

It was noticeably found that cats do indeed mirror many of the personality traits of their owners and findings included:

Cats with more neurotic owners often tended to display more anxious and stress-related (neurotic) behaviors.

Pedigree cat owners displayed less neurotic behavior than other cat owners.

Owners that displayed increased levels of extroversion were more likely to allow their cats more access to outdoors than other owners.

Cats that were less aggressive, anxious, avoidant and fearful were associated with owners that scored more highly on levels of conscientiousness

Owner’s levels of introversion, non-agreeableness and neuroticism were shown to be raised as the number of cats increased in a household

Owners that scored highly on agreeableness were shown to have a higher level of satisfaction with their cats. Agreeable owners were also associated with having cats that fell within a normal (not under or over) weight range.

Pedigree cat owners were also associated with the fact that their cats were more likely to be overweight.

It should be mentioned that cultural norms should be factored into any study. For example, cats in the UK are more likely to be outdoor cats than their American counterparts.

The study does however seem to highlight that owner personality does indeed reflect on a cat’s behavior and lifestyle.
