This country wants to ban Telegram

According to the Jakartaglobe, a publication in Indonesia, the country is reportedly considering banning Telegram.

Telegram is a hugely popular app in Indonesia, by the way.

The reason, alas, is lack of moderation.

According to Indonesian authorities, Telegram isn't doing enough, or in some cases nothing at all, to moderate content and remove channels promoting or endorsing illegal content.

Namely, Indonesia is concerned about the fact Telegram isn't doing much, according to them, to remove channels promoting online gambling and pornography.

There are countries that are very strict, and countries that are very libertine.

Indonesia probably falls somewhere in between, but it's probably more strict than others.

We tend to forget that sometimes, but Indonesia has the largest population of Muslims worldwide, and it adheres to some Islamic laws quite rigidly.

There are regions and provinces where wearing tight clothes, for example, is frowned upon or illegal, and the same goes for public displays of affection.

There are also strict laws about alcohol and drugs and smoking.

All of the above may or may have not play a role in the potential ban of Telegram.

But, to be honest, this feels like the start. I think, in the next months, Telegram is going to be under heavy pressure to 'moderate' content left and right.
