Ex-OpenAI Mira Murati is fueling the AI salary war

By LeftFooted | Cars & tech | 4 Jul 2025

Mira Murati, former chief technology officer (or technical officer, depending on the source) at OpenAI left the company nearly a year ago to start her own startup, called Thinking Machines Lab (TML).

Since then, Murati has been raising funds and hiring people.

As per usual, her startup has apparently been trying to 'nick' talent from other firms, including OpenAI.

According to recent federal filings obtained and shared by Business Insider, TML is trying to entice talent with up to $500,000 in salary.

These figures include salary and nothing else, so that means it doesn't include sign-on bonuses and equity awards.

This is food for thought, I reckon.

There are so many jobs that are fast becoming obsolete, and there's one that's growing, and it begins with e and ends with -ngineer.

My cousin is a mechanical engineer, and I once asked him an interesting question.

I asked him, "you're a mechanical engineer, let's imagine you want to become an electrical engineer, how would that work?"

The short version of the long answer is, obviously it's not like leaving a job as a flight attendant on United to become a flight attendant on Delta, but a mechanical engineer with his brain screwed on the right way wouldn't take that long to also qualify as an electrical engineer.

So I told him, well, you might want to start now then.

I don't have the intellectual capacity for that, which is why I'm writing about it, but it fascinates me.

And it fascinates me that these people are throwing around huge sums of money to onboard people, while there's people in other jobs that are struggling.

Further proof that the world is what it is. And reality is what it is.
