Ex-OpenAI CTO Mira Murati is still busy building her dream team (and getting cash)

By LeftFooted | Cars & tech | 26 Apr 2025

Mira Murati, former Chief Technical Officer at OpenAI, left the company in late 2024 for unclear reasons and founded her start-up, Thinking Machines Lab, about a few weeks later.

Since then, Murati has kept busy doing two things.

First, she's been trying to get funding for her start-up.

Successfully, dare we say, considering her start-up received $2 billion in funding in the latest round alone, bringing its total value to $9-10 billion.

Second, she's been trying to 'steal' OpenAI's most prominent stars and convince them to get on board with her project.

She's been doing so by offering great salaries, duh, but also equity.

And, once again, successfully, apparently.

No one knows what Thinking Machines Lab wants to achieve yet, presumably a chatbot will be on the cards at some point, but what else?

AI companies are all the rage at the minute but, to be fair, this is becoming like a chatbot competition.

We'll see.
