Love's Wicked Tales
"The Smuggle"
1994
You gave yourself to me
Oh beautiful young rose,
But someone said to me
You can't have that wonderful rose.
For a time you've waited
As those who've hated,
I've smuggled you
Into my life.
First it was through the window
And then you needed water,
A glass, and of course,
A way to fit obscurely into my life.
But in my haste
I threw you into water,
It was filled with ice
And I feared your death.
Quickly I thought
Of a way to melt that ice,
Which surrounded you
From all sides.
Gingerly, carefully,
And especially cautiously,
I placed you above my lamp.
Then I watched,
And waited,
As that ice began
To melt away.
It has almost dissipated
Into the air,
As if it
were never there.
Soon you will bloom,
And make my life
Full of excitement and happiness,
Once again.
When that day comes
My dear sweet wonderful rose,
I will be there to smile
And to laugh with you.
We will both share joy
With our lives together,
And your radiant love
Will fill my heart forever.
