The new Netflix series Shadow and Bone (based on the book) is fantastic guys.
While it is a bit overdone to place stories in a weird version of Russia or China, the story doesn't lose a lot by it.
The story follows Alina Starkov, an orphan turned cartographer in the First Army and her dear friend Malyen "Mal" Oretsev a soldier. In this universe, a "wall" of darkness filled with horrible monsters called volcra part the land in two and offer extremely dangerous passage between the two sides of the country. The lore indicated that the "wall" or the Fold as it is called in the show, was created by a Dark summoner. Thus the legend is that one day a sun summoner would come and banish the darkness with light.

Alina is the sun summoner. So we watch her train, develop her skills, and pursue the legend. Concurrently, there is a plot to kidnap her for exploitation by a myriad of groups and characters which provide great side stories.
There is action, intrigue, love, magic, war, fantastic beasts, steampunk machinery, sadness, adventure, and suspense.
Of course, things end before closure, but that's the way of things.
Take the time to watch this, it's worthwhile.
