Polygon: AggLayer is coming!

By KMatt | Blogging Crypto | 26 Jan 2024

Polygon, one of the main and most used layer-2 of Ethereum, was born as a scaling solution to make transactions on Ethereum faster and cheaper.
The development team is constantly working to improve the service, especially in view of the ever-growing competition, such as Solana.

The AggLayer v1 mainnet was recently announced, which will be launched in February, with the aim of creating an additional layer of Aggregated Blockchains, i.e. different blockchains aggregated together.
It will allow developers to connect any L1 or L2 chain to AggLayer, thus building a Web3 network that resembles a single chain with unified liquidity and nearly unlimited scalability.

Considering that layer 1 blockchains such as Ethereum and Bitcoin do not communicate with each other and operate entirely independently, AggLayer aims to solve this problem, uniting the fragmented landscape of blockchains into a ZK-protected L1 and L2 chain network that resembles a single chain.

*ZK stands for zero-knowledge and allows one party to prove to another party that a certain statement is true, without revealing any additional information. Used to improve scalability and privacy.

The advantages are simple, the L1 and L2 chains will maintain their sovereignty while being able to draw on a huge pool of unified liquidity, while dApp developers will be able to reach users who also operate on other chains without using UX bridging.
Finally, for end users there will be a unified user experience (UX) similar to that of the Internet, i.e. a single environment that does not require bridging and seamless cross-chain transactions.

The news doesn't end here, there could also be news for the MATIC token which should change its name to POL, a token that already exists and has a market value similar to MATIC.

However, the news was not very positively affected, at the MATIC/POL exchange rate the value is 17% lower than a week ago.
The official press release does not mention this possible change, for now it is just a hypothesis. The other possibility is that both will continue to exist.
