About a week ago the Dencun update brought a breath of fresh air to the Ethereum blockchain, introducing EIP-4844, also known as Prodo-Danksharding. Among its most revolutionary innovations are “blobs,” large data packets that promise to revolutionize network scalability and efficiency.
Blobs are data storage spaces within Ethereum blocks. Instead of directly including data in transactions, as was done before, blobs offer a more efficient way to handle large amounts of information.
The operation can be summarized and divided into 4 phases:
- Blob creation: a user or application creates a blob, which can contain up to 1MB of data
- Sending the blob to the Ethereum network along with a special transaction
- Storing the Blob in the next block, separately from traditional transactions
- Data access: blob data can be recovered by anyone using the blob hash and an encryption key
Advantages of EIP-4844 and Blobs
- Reduction of gas fees: by compressing the data, the blobs are able to reduce the amount of space needed within the block. As a result, transactions using blobs will have a lower gas cost than traditional ones.
- Better scalability: The ability to store large amounts of data in blobs frees up block space for transactions. This means that the Ethereum network will be able to handle a greater number of transactions per second, improving overall scalability.
- Efficiency for Layer 2 solutions: Blobs are particularly beneficial for layer 2 rollup solutions, such as Optimism and Arbitrum. These rollups can aggregate thousands of transactions into a single parent transaction on Ethereum, using blobs to store the associated data.
- Greater flexibility for developers in how they manage data on their applications, storing sensitive or private data in the blob while ensuring transaction transparency.
Dencun is therefore the beginning of a new era for Ethereum, paving the way for an increasingly high-performance and versatile future.
