Cloudflare announced the launch of NET Dollar, a dollar-backed stablecoin that seeks to power a new economic model for the internet in the era of artificial intelligence (AI).

The company, known for its global infrastructure in security and connectivity, maintains that the digital economy must advance at the pace of autonomous AI agents, capable of performing tasks such as booking flights, shopping online, or managing schedules.

According to a statement from Cloudflare, the internet model of recent decades has been based primarily on advertising and traditional bank transfers. The NET Dollar proposal introduces a different approach, based on microtransactions and split payments, that would better reward creators, developers, and original content providers.

Among the applications planned for NET Dollar, one of the most notable is the possibility of instant and automated payments. This would allow personal or business agents to execute scheduled transactions, such as purchasing a product as soon as it goes on sale or paying a supplier upon confirming a delivery.

The stablecoin also seeks global interoperability, envisioned as an internet-native money capable of operating frictionlessly across currencies, geographies, and time zones.

Additionally, new monetization opportunities are opening up, from creators receiving direct revenue for their original work to AI companies transparently compensating the data sources they use.

It's also important to mention that Cloudflare is working to promote open standards like the Agent Payments Protocol and x402, which are designed to simplify and unify the way digital agents send and receive money online.

Cloudflare's initiative is just one more link in a current trend in the technology industry. Companies like Google are also developing AI-based payment systems compatible with stablecoins. Its A2A model, designed for autonomous agents to automatically send and receive money, seeks to streamline reliable transactions between different systems and currencies.
