In 2017, a guy called Billy McFarland and Ja Rule, a rapper most people only remember for the 50 Cent feud at this point, organised a music festival called Fyre Festival.
Except, it was all the scam.
Put simply, the festival was cancelled after tickets had been sold and there were elements to determine this had been done on purpose.
Ja Rule was dismissed from the subsequent class action lawsuit, but McFarland wasn't, and he ended up in jail.
In late 2024, McFarland announced a new festival and ticket sales began shortly thereafter.
The location was Isla Mujeres, in Mexico.
Except, it was once again a scam.
In February 2025, the tourism directorate of Isla Mujeres, the minister for tourism in Quintana Roo, and all the hotels listed as 'partners' on the Fyre website said they all knew nothing about the event and had not received any approach or enquiry.
In April, the festival was postponed, and we can bet any money it'll eventually be cancelled.
So the question is, why would anyone buy tickets to Fyre 2 knowing what happened to the first one?
Who knows.
Probably the same reason why people still lose money on memecoins like HawkTuah or why people still believe in Luna or FTX.
Some people never learn.
