Crypto: What is Optimism, a cheaper, more scalable alternative to Ethereum

By LeftFooted | bitcoinea | 2 Jan 2024

Optimism is a more scalable, cheaper version of Ethereum.

It's a Layer 2 cryptocurrency, created as a spin-off version of Ethereum, designed to be more scalable. As in, designed to process more transactions, potentially cheaper and faster.

The name actually comes from the optimistic rollup technology it uses to be more scalable. In crypto jargon, a rollup is an L2 blockchain that processes transactions away from the L1 it's based on to reduce fees.

Optimism (OP) is currently trading at $3.91, close to its all time high of around $4.16.

It has a market cap of $16 billion, and a circulating supply of 911 million OP against a total supply of 4.294 billion OP.
