Bridge vs Swap vs (off-chain) Exchange

Bridge vs Swap vs (off-chain) Exchange

Learning about crypto is a marathon, not a sprint.

In the unlikely event of your needing to know, here's a quick breakdown of the difference between swapping, briding and off-chain exchanges.

Off-chain exchanges is what you do with a CEX. You can't do it on your own. You take coin / token A, and exchange to coin / token B. These coins don't have to be compatible, or on the same blockchain, because the transaction takes place off-chain.

Useful reminder: when you keep your crypto in a CEX, that's technically NOT your crypto. It's a number on a screen. That's why withdrawing funds can sometimes take a lot longer than the technical time you need on the blockchain.

That's because the transaction has to be approved and managed by the CEX first.

So in essence, exchanging funds from Bitcoin to ETH, from ETH to LTC, from LTC to DOGE, just means the numbers on the screen change.

And the CEX you're using now 'guarantees' (well, they're supposed to, anyway) that your $100 worth of DOGE, for example, is now $100 worth of BTC.

Swapping is what happens when you convert funds from one token to another on a blockchain. Say you've got 1 ETH, worth around $1.6k at the time of writing, and you want to swap that to USDC.

The transaction happens online, there'll be fees related to the blockchain you're using, and you can't swap token A to token B unless they're on the same blockchain.

Which brings us on the bridging, which is the act of moving funds from one blockchain to the other, via a 'bridge', alas.

You can do that with ETH, for example.

ETH exists on several blockchains (Ethereum, Arbitrum, Optimism, Base, etc) and you can bridge funds from one blockchain to the other.

Mind you, that can be expensive. And we also need to add blockchain fees to the bridging fees.
