The Hex - A Second Breaking the 4th Wall Game From the Developer of Pony Island

Another gem of a game I recently picked up via rummaging through the Gamivo.com bargain-bin of cheap Steam keys is "The Hex", which I was able to grab for just £0.19 as compared to the full Steam price of £7.19.  And while I had some idea of what was awaiting me going in, even so, The Hex was a pretty mind blowing experience as games go...

The Hex

The Hex is a game that it's impossible to speak too much about without giving too much away, and by doing put dents in what is an extremely novel gaming experience for those who might be considering giving it a play.   And in a small way even the title of this short review risks doing just that.  So if The Hex is a game you already have on your play list, consider this post a hearty recommendation, stop reading now, go download it, and dive in blind.

However, if you're uncertain, unaware of it, or just looking for a little more information, I won't be revealing here anymore than I was aware of before playing the game.  Aspects that most who seek this game out are not only aware of, but are the reason they're drawn to this game in the first place.  And that only touch the tip of the iceberg of what this game actually delivers.

While the audience can see through this "wall", the convention assumes, the actors act as if they cannot.  A concept that has been somewhat popularized and brought more into the mainstream in recent times with the Deadpool movies (and comics before), in the sense that Deadpool is fully aware that he is a comic-book character often communicating directly with those watching/reading, whereas others go about their super-hero shenanigans oblivious to the fact that they are little more than puppets acting out ever more elaborate narratives for the amusement and pleasure of us the audience.   And this is a concept that The Hex also toys with in a very successful way...

More Than The Sum of It's Parts

If The Hex were a game you were to stumble across, and judge based upon the arguably lacking graphics, and seemingly quite played out given plot of a murder-mystery theme, and walk away based on those intentional limitations, you'd be missing out.  Because The Hex is a game that offers so much more than the sum of it's parts.  Even knowing as you now do that this game wanders into 4th wall breaking territory, The Hex goes there and beyond.  The second game by the developers of "Pony Island" arguably the most well-known and revered game from this particular offbeat niche,  The Hex (like its' predecessor) doesn't just demonstrate the 4th wall concept in a theoretical sense, it shows you the door, and lets you inside.  If ever a game could be said to be a real life glitch in the Matrix, The Hex is arguably it...
