I began the story about the HIP beatmusic of Denmark from the late 60ties and early 70ties.
The iconic album starting the HIP era, was named HIP from 1967 by the group Steppeulvene.

Let me introduce you to the drummer Preben Devantier, who in 1961 joined the reorganized band Melvis & His Gentlemen
Melvis = Ivan Haki Haagensen, founded the band in 1958. The name Melvis was taken from an Elvis parody in a Donald Duck magazine.
With different band-members and versions of band-names all involving Melvis, the band around 1961, became known as Melvis & His Gentlemen, and Preben Devantier was as said above the drummer from 1961 to 1966

Preben Devantier played about in a group named Peter Belli & Les Rivals ( I'll come back to them in a later post ), before he and Peter Belli got arrested for smoking hashish. 

After release from prison in 1967 Preben became cofounder of Steppeulvene ( Steppenwolves). This group is cult for their one and only album HIP from 1967 - but before getting there, the next post will introduce the bass-player Søren Seirup, the guitarist Stig Møller plus the poet and vocalist Eik Skalø
