Top 3 reasons to build games on Blockchains

By Bala | Bala Blockchain Gaming | 10 Dec 2023

It has now become a new trend to build games on top of Blockchains. Many game teams are exploring this option. They choose their comfortable blockchain and explore this. Not all the games are directly built on Blockchains. Most of the games are built with the support of the blockchain and that is the recommended approach too. A few years back the concept of Play2Earn got familiar when people started using blockchain to store their assets but later the game itself was thought to be inside the blockchain. Only when there were scalability issues and other challenges, did people start getting back to not using blockchain for everything but just using it for assets and whatever it is good for.

In this article I'm going to be talking about 3 key reasons why people select blockchains to build their games and also why it is important to build games linking blockchains. The biggest advantage of having multiple blockchains linked to a particular game is that the user base or player base can be attracted by multiple blockchains. Some games even decide to have their assets on multiple blockchains and have different modes that work on different blockchains. These are still ideas for many game teams and some game teams bring it to reality.

Making game outcomes provably fair

One of the biggest advantages that blockchain provides us is that it produces blocks and each of those blocks has a unique hash. This hash is unknown and is also not predictable. Someone who is writing a game can make use of this facility to create games that involve RNG and dice rolling. When this is based on blockchain, if someone has to verify the outcome, they will be able to verify the outcome by entering the block details and other necessary information. This is what makes it provably fair.

With the help of this dice-rolling feature, people can randomize the outcome of the game and those who like gambling can play such games. A few people don't wish to have an RNG element in the game they play but still want to invest and play because it gives them money back.

Have game assets as NFTs

Many games rely on assets. During the early days when I used to play Dota 2 on Steam, I was wondering if it would be a great feature to have the assets tradable. Today blockchain technology is facilitating that. Even though we can obtain many assets inside the game in Dota 2 or similar games, they cannot be traded or sold to others. That's something they have restricted. With the support of blockchain, we can create NFTs and those NFTs are nothing but assets and special items for the players they can be taken outside of the game and traded with other players who would like to play with those assets or would like to own those assets. This is another special reason why building games on top of blockchain is more reliable.

Providing an earning opportunity for players

Apart from just trading the assets, these days blockchain games provide enormous earning opportunities to the players. This is one of the biggest reasons why modern games are being built on blockchains instead of keeping them simple web2 games. People get the opportunity to trade their NFTs with other players and games like splinterlands offer a play2earn facility where people get rewards for spending their time playing games.
