Working in the dirt.

First Post

Hi! This is my first post. I have only been gardening for a few years now. I've wanted to have a raised garden bed for quite a while. I finally bought one about three years ago. Man, are those things expensive, even more so now!

I bought the bed you see in my header pic and put put one squash, one zuchinni and one Mexican sour gherkin plant in it. They really took off and I was hooked. All of those plants gave me and my family plenty of vegetables to eat for two months or so and maybe even longer.

Anyways, I looked at buying a few more raised beds and boy did they shoot up in price from the first one I bought. I looked in several places on how to make my own and the rest is history. I have made three of my own raised beds out of old reclaimed wood from an old fence we tore down when we bought this place.

I am going to show you the process I use in my second post showing how I make them. Its really simple. To make a bed about 3L X 6W X 11D all you need is 8 six foot fence panels and 6 4X4 that are about 1 foot tall. After that is a simple matter of drilling, putting in the screws, putting it in place and filling with dirt. What you put in it as far as veggies or flowers is up to you.

This pic is one I built that I put in the front yard for the little lady to fill with flowers. Eventually, she will have her raised beds across the front of the house filled with flowers and I'll have my backyard filled with the beds with plenty of veggies for us.

Its just me, my gf, our five doggies and one cat in my family. And yes at least two of our dogs loves to go to the garden and pick their own veggies. Here is a pic of our Great Dane, Wenter, eating one of the zuchinni we let her pick.

Thanks for reading my first post. I hope to have many more posts about my journey on being a Backyard Gardener. :)
