The International Union of Architects (UIA) has named Barcelona as Unesco's World Capital of Architecture for the year 2026, beating Beijing in the final.
La Unión Internacional de Arquitectos (UIA) ha nombrado a Barcelona, como Capital Mundial de la Arquitectura de la Unesco para el año 2026, superando en la final a Pekín.
This recognition is important for the city, since it somehow recognizes that in addition to the modernism of Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch, the city has managed to stay at the forefront of architecture, as well as successfully overcome the transformation that the city suffered with the celebration of the 1992 Olympic Games.
Este reconocimiento es importante para la ciudad, ya que de alguna forma reconoce, que además del modernismo de Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner y Puig i Cadafalch, la ciudad ha sabido mantenerse en la vanguardia de la arquitectura, así como superar con exito la transformación que sufrió la ciudad con la celebración de los Juegos Olímpicos de 1992.
This distinction brings with it the organization of the World Congress of the International Union of Architects, under the motto One today, One tomorrow, putting an eye on the sustainability of our cities. Barcelona has experience in this area, since it organized the one in 1996, with the presence of renowned architects such as Daniel Libeskind, Jacques Herzog, Norman Foster and Peter Eisenman.

As an anecdote, the organization of this event will coincide with the centenary of Antoni Gaudí's death, and if it weren't for the pandemic, it would also have coincided with the completion of the works on the Sagrada Familia.
