What it Takes to Succeed - Building the Personal Brand

Establishing a strong personal brand is essential for standing out in a competitive online world. But it is a large ask if you are not already famous. Many people do not know what it actually takes to carve their own niche and gain a following. So, let's clear up a few of the basic questions.

A rule of thumb--and this is as simple as it gets--says you need 70 pieces of content to create a community, and approximately two years of activity.

That's a lot, but also not a lot.

Effectively, a personal brand depends on a body of work made available to your community, or even the world at large. Every post, interaction, and piece of content created contributes to how people see you, or if they take notice, at all. Producing that minimum viable body of work can serve as a foundation for building your brand, attracting an audience, and showcasing your expertise. It is not easy or immediate, but is an absolute requirement. Quality content, marketing, and luck can all make things go faster, but it is important when starting that you accept this is an investment of your time and effort.

In this article, we explore the key elements of creating a minimum body of work online, from motivation and content marketing to maximizing the value of your creations.

Find Your Motivation:

This is number one. Before anything else, you are going be tested, and tempted to stop. When you make a post and get zero views, when your content gets a dislike, when it feels like you not making progress, your motivation leaves you. Think of all the people that have started and stopped. Few ever finish. But if you want to succeed, you need to keep motivated in spite of weak results. You need to keep at until the end.

Clarify your motivation for building a personal brand and creating an online body of work. Understand what you are trying to accomplish. Is it for fun, money, fame? All of that? None of it? Figure it out. Write about it. Identify your passions, interests, and areas of expertise that align with your long-term goals. Understanding your motivation will provide the drive and enthusiasm needed to consistently produce valuable content.

Make Content:

Seems easy. But it isn't.

If it was easy, why are sites not absolutely inundated with articles? Most people are lurkers, readers, consumers. Even if they have a wish to write or produce content, they will never take that first step. You must. You must do it regularly. The more content, the better your results. Each piece adds to the last. It builds up, reaching a critical level until you realize success.

There is nothing stopping you. And you have a target. Where are your 70 articles, posts, videos? Make it a hundred. Produce one every day, and put it online. Soon, you have your body of work. Soon people recognize you for that work. Soon, you can point to what you have done and people will recognize you as a professional.

Consistency is Key:

Consistency is crucial when building your personal brand online. Commit to a regular publishing schedule that suits your availability and capacity. Whether it's weekly, biweekly, or monthly, maintaining a consistent flow of content helps establish your reliability and keeps your audience engaged.

Doing too much can be a waste of time, but too little is a similar mistake. Figure out what your audience wants, and keep to it. And I do mean keep to it. It is all about maintaining that steady progress, because you will want to quit. Quitting is the only way you can fail, and most people fail when they try to build a personal brand.

Content Marketing Strategy:

Craft a content marketing strategy to promote and distribute your work effectively. You put in the effort, so don't let it go to waste. Utilize social media platforms, email newsletters, guest blogging, collaborations, and SEO techniques to increase the reach of your content. Engage with your audience, encourage sharing, and foster meaningful connections to expand your brand's visibility.

Be thoughtful with what you write. Figure out how to reference back to old posts. There is no reason for your past work to be forgotten. It should get fresh views, and it can if you are smart about what you write, or how you write it.

Think about a progressive series of tutorials. Teach people how to do one thing, then something related but more advanced. Suggest people look at your earlier work if they need to understand how to do something. Your recent content feeds people to that earlier work, strengthening its own impact while continuing to make your past efforts relevant.

Provide Value and Unique Perspective:

To maximize the impact of your content, focus on providing value and showcasing your unique perspective. Offer practical tips, share insights, and solve problems specific to your target audience. Differentiate yourself by presenting information in a distinct, authentic way that resonates with your audience and sets you apart from others in your niche.

Sometimes, it pays to be contrarian. If everyone says up, be the voice that says down. If they say black, you say white. There will be others like you, and they will take anchor in the harbor of your content. The seas are sometimes rough, and validating an opinion is all it takes to make a reader into a member of your community.

Optimize for Search Engines:

Maximize the value of your content by optimizing it for search engines. Research relevant keywords and incorporate them naturally throughout your content to improve its discoverability. Write compelling headlines, meta descriptions, and alt text for images, ensuring that your content ranks well in search engine results. Keep up to date with the best practices.

You will need to go back to old content. Your first attempts will not be your best, but as you grow your skills you can evolve. Don't feel bad about rewriting things. Or, just reuse the same topics, but with the benefit of better skills. Nothing is stopping you from having the top five tutorials about a given topic. We call that saturation.

Engage with Your Audience:

Actively engage with your audience by responding to comments, messages, and feedback. It is as simple as that. Those people are what you want. That is the end goal. Encourage discussions, ask for opinions, and create a sense of community around your brand. Put up polls, even, or anything that can draw them to interact with you. Building strong connections with your audience fosters loyalty and encourages them to become brand advocates.

It really is simple. In fact, don't let any comment go by without a response, at least until there are too many to read.

Repurpose and Expand:

Extend the value of your minimum viable body of work by repurposing and expanding your content. Repackage your articles into ebooks, create videos based on your blog posts, or turn your podcasts into written transcripts. This allows you to reach new audiences and leverage your existing content in different formats.

Always get better, go bigger, and be clever.

Don't be afraid to try new platforms or communities, either. You can try moving to a new site, or even a new paradigm. You might write manga reviews, but you also livestream your chess playing on Twitch. You do a travelblog but also post your guitar solos on YouTube. If there is something that can draw attention to you, put it out there. Your brand is not about the work, but the person you are. Don't feel like you have to keep things clinical. Give yourself voice and identity.

Continuous Learning and Improvement:

Never stop learning and improving your craft. Stay updated with industry trends, seek feedback from your audience, and invest in your personal development. As you grow, evolve your body of work to reflect your expertise and the changing needs of your audience.

Even review your past efforts. Show people how far you have come, and the errors you made along the way. Do a deep analysis. It shows you have mastery of your craft, and are self-aware enough to notice faults in your own work.

My Final Thoughts

Creating a minimum viable body of work online is a powerful strategy for building a personal brand. There are no shortcuts. It is an investment. But it is also a clear target you can work to achieve. By understanding your motivation, marketing your content effectively, and maximizing its value, you can elevate your online presence and establish yourself as an authority in your field. Embrace the journey of crafting valuable content, engage with your audience, and continuously refine your personal brand to leave a lasting impact in the digital
