People don't just want a story. They want to be taken on a journey. They want to go from one point to another, with you, and maybe do something of their own.
A lot of times, this takes the shape of learning skills. A content creator might provide tutorials or lessons, even guides for games, and this lets their audience do something with that information. It leads to something. But it can lead to bigger things, especially if handled well.
Aspiring authors and content creators are constantly seeking innovative ways to stand out from the crowd. One powerful strategy gaining traction is taking on a public project, such as writing a book, creating an online course, or embarking on a series of reviews, articles, or other related works. As November approaches, the anticipation of NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) builds. For me, as an author, it provides the perfect opportunity to delve into the benefits of undertaking a public project and how it can revolutionize your digital content and personal brand.
A public project like this is something you can do, and invite others to do, creating a shared journey where your audience is invested not only in the result of your work but every part of the process. It generates excitement, and hype, and lets your readers forge a great memory which will lead them back to your content again and again.
Though you may find your own big project, I will write from my own perspective. NaNoWriMo is a challenge to write a 50,000 word novel during the month of November. It is great for new writers, and attracts famous published authors, as well. Not everyone finishes, but it is easy to post and share work, get feedback, and build connections.
But the benefits of the project go deeper than that.
Amplifying Your Writing Skills:
Undertaking a public project, such as participating in NaNoWriMo, presents a unique chance to hone your writing skills. The intense focus and discipline required to complete a project within a set timeframe can push you to explore new depths of creativity and productivity. The process of crafting a book, creating a course, or producing a series challenges you to refine your writing style, experiment with different techniques, and develop a consistent voice, all of which ultimately enhance your digital content.
I have mentioned the importance of scheduling before. But it is not only the skill of setting time aside, or plotting ahead, but actively following your plan. You can set your alarm for 5:30 AM, but it does not matter unless you get out of bed and get ready. If you always hit the snooze button, you might as well just get up at 7:00.
Building an Engaged Audience:
A public project exposes your work to a wider audience, allowing you to connect with like-minded individuals who share a passion for your chosen genre or topic. Participating in NaNoWriMo, for instance, opens up opportunities to engage with a supportive community of fellow writers, potential readers, and enthusiasts. By sharing your progress, insights, and snippets of your work, you can establish a genuine connection with your audience, cultivate a loyal following, and even gain valuable feedback to improve your content.
Every person you engage with might translate to an additional view, or more. They might purchase your work. They might become a fan. One person may not seem like a lot, but it is one person every so often, again and again. Each brick makes a wall, and though they are not much by themselves, the result is obvious.
Showcasing Expertise and Authority:
Taking on a public project enables you to showcase your expertise and establish yourself as an authority in your field. Writing a book, creating a course, or producing a series demonstrates your commitment and depth of knowledge, positioning you as a credible source of information. This expertise can be leveraged across your digital platforms, allowing you to create compelling content, attract a wider audience, and build trust with your followers. As you share your journey and insights, your personal brand gains authenticity and becomes more compelling to both new and existing audiences.
In my case, picking apart aspects of plot, outline, narrative structure all blend seamlessly together, giving great opportunities to produce targeted content for my audience. The same can go with courses, or other projects. Not only can a creator discuss the content of their course, but the method of its creation. What apps, tools, or editing went into the course? What did you use for your microphone, or lighting? Where are you publishing it? How much did it cost, and how much did it make? Every question is a separate piece of content that will create views and interest, letting you answer from a position of authority.
Cultivating a Personal Brand:
A public project serves as a catalyst for developing and refining your personal brand. It provides a platform to showcase your unique voice, values, and perspectives, making you more relatable and memorable to your audience. By consistently delivering high-quality content throughout your project, you reinforce your brand identity and increase your visibility in the digital landscape. A strong personal brand not only helps you stand out from the competition but also opens doors to collaborations, speaking engagements, and other professional opportunities.
Many people attempt to build a personal brand, but miss one key aspect. The person. A banal, uninteresting commentator, or a journalist writing the same basic articles will find it hard to gather an audience. But creating a bold work will demonstrate a person as an individual and differentiate them from the rest.
Expanding Revenue Streams:
A public project has the potential to create multiple revenue streams for authors and content creators. Whether it's through book sales, course enrollments, or sponsorship deals for your series, a well-executed project can generate income and monetize your digital content. By building a loyal and engaged audience, you create a market for your offerings, allowing you to leverage your personal brand and expertise to maximize financial returns.
Ask yourself, if you are busy making posts and producing content, does it lead to anything? Why not put in the same effort as you build toward a lasting product that will pay dividends. Most times, life is always about passive income, and when you have something that can regularly make you a bit of income, you are in a great position to do what you want.
My Final Thoughts
Embarking on a public project, such as writing a book, creating a course, or producing a series, offers an array of benefits for authors and content creators seeking to amplify their digital content and build a strong personal brand. By participating in NaNoWriMo, you not only refine your writing skills but also connect with an engaged community, establish your expertise, cultivate a personal brand, and explore new avenues for revenue generation. Embrace the power of public projects, and unlock the potential to transform your creative journey into a thriving digital presence.
Expect to hear more from me as we get closer to November. I invite you all to join me in NaNoWriMo, and share your progress. But if you are not interested, I suggest you look for your own big project and share it with the community.
