We continued our journey north of Portugal, moving further away from Porto each time. This time, the train took me to Viana do Castelo, a charming city with many attractions.

One of the attractions I would like to mention is the funicular near the railway station. It connects the city to the temple on top of Santa Luzia Mountain, offering a breathtaking panoramic view of the city and ocean coast.

The funicular was opened in 1923 and has been operating ever since. In 2007, it underwent an upgrade with new trailers from Spain, making it the largest funicular in Portugal due to its height difference.

The trailers that transport passengers function as a balance, or in other words, they help each other rise or fall while meeting halfway. Each carriage can hold up to 25 people and cover a distance of 650 metres within 7 minutes. During winter, it is open from 10:00 to 17:00, and in summer, from 9:00 to 20:00.
