Presearch Discord Server Turns into a Hub for Spam

Presearch Discord Server Turns into a Hub for Spam

By Mando on Crypto | @CryptoVista | 29 Oct 2024

In any crypto community, particularly one centered around a project like *Presearch*, the role of a moderator or Discord administrator is crucial. They act as a bridge between the project team and the community, ensuring a space where participants can engage in meaningful discussions, exchange information, and seek support.

However, when moderators or administrators flood the general channel with advertisements, it raises red flags and can create a range of problems.

Noise published in general channel by one of Presearch moderators, disrupting users organic conversation

Here's why this practice can harm a crypto community:

Erosion of Trust and Credibility: Community members join a project's Discord server for genuine discussions and to seek guidance or knowledge. When moderators, who are perceived as representatives of the project, begin pushing ads or promotional content in the main channel, it undermines the integrity of the community space. It gives the impression that the project is prioritizing revenue-generation or external partnerships over open, unbiased discussions.

This behavior creates a disconnect, leading users to question whether moderators are working in the best interest of the project or are simply trying to monetize the platform at the expense of the community. Trust is critical in the crypto world, and once lost, it can be incredibly difficult to rebuild.

Disruption of Organic Conversations: Channels like “general” are typically created to be hubs for organic conversations about the project. In the case of Presearch, members might want to discuss topics ranging from node setups and staking strategies to the project's roadmap or partnerships. When moderators push frequent advertisements, it disrupts the flow of these discussions and dilutes the quality of conversations. This discourages valuable contributors from engaging, which is detrimental to building a knowledgeable, active community.

Parroting Noise Over Signal: Active participants share news, support, strategies, and sometimes even spot potential risks or bugs. But when moderators frequently inject or parroting each other, it creates a "noise over signal" effect. Important messages, announcements, and valuable insights get buried under promotional duplicate content, making it harder for members to locate or keep track of critical information.

For new members, a Discord server cluttered with ads in the main channels can be overwhelming and deter them from becoming regular contributors. They might interpret this as a sign of an unmanaged or poorly structured community.

Another example: Instead of one moderator giving assitance, in Presearch you get two moderators parroting, with one regurgitating responses from the other.

Misalignment with the Project’s Vision: Presearch is positioned as a decentralized search engine project that aims to protect user privacy and reward contributors. Community members join Discord to support and discuss this vision. Excessive advertising contradicts the core message of decentralization and user empowerment. It detracts from the value proposition of the project, leading users to wonder whether the project's principles are being compromised for short-term gains.

For instance, if ads focus on unrelated irrelevant promotions in social media, it could raise questions about whether the leadership behind the project shares the community’s vision or if it’s straying from its original mission.

Presearch Should Strike the Right Balance

It’s essential to strike a balance between providing value to the community and exploring revenue opportunities or partnerships. Here are some recommendations for achieving this balance:

1. Use Dedicated Channels for Promotions: Staff should direct promotional messages and social media sharing to specific channels dedicated solely to promotions or advertisements. This keeps the general channel clean and focused on project-related discussions.
2. Clear Advertising Guidelines: The team should establish transparent rules around advertisements and third-party promotions. Any promoted content should align with the project’s mission and add value to the community.
3. Community Feedback Mechanism: Encourage community feedback on advertisements and the behavior of moderators. If the majority of the community feels that ads are intrusive, it’s vital to re-evaluate the approach.
4. Role Separation: Distinguish between official moderators who handle community discussions and those responsible for promotions. This separation helps maintain trust and credibility.

In summary, the role of a Discord moderator or administrator in a crypto community is more than just enforcing rules; it’s about fostering an open and engaging environment. Pushing excessive advertisements in the general channel not only disrupts valuable discussions but also jeopardizes trust, credibility, and the project’s vision.

By understanding and respecting the community’s needs, and by maintaining a clear distinction between discussions and advertisements, Presearch can ensure its Discord remains a place for genuine interaction and growth.

The prolonged decline in the Presearch token’s price, especially compared to other coins from the same period, indicates growing dissatisfaction among users with the project's roadmap and current state. This suggests that many are losing confidence in its direction and are not seeing any clear utility or compelling reason to invest in or engage with the token. This sentiment reflects a broader concern that the project may be failing to deliver on its promises, causing users to question its long-term value and relevance.
